Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito recused himself Monday from a major climate-change case after facing calls to step aside due to stock holdings in oil companies.
A letter posted in the case did not specify a reason, but the conservative justice has previously recused himself from other cases involving companies where he holds stock.
“Justice Alito has determined that he will not continue to participate in this case,” the letter reads.
The recusal comes shortly before the court hears the case filed by local officials in Boulder, Colorado, against Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil. It’s one of dozens of similar cases alleging companies deceived the public about how fossil fuels contribute to climate change. Billions of dollars in damages could be at stake.
The high court agreed to hear an appeal from the companies, backed by the Trump administration.
The energy companies argue the lawsuits pose a serious threat to the industry and that state courts aren’t the right place to deal with the global issue of climate change.
Why is it always after scrutiny?
Why is it never before?
(These are rhetorical questions. So wrong answers only.)

WRONG answers only.
Because he was busy catching up on “Friends”, only to find out it’s a very bland show.
Kagan and Sotomayor have both recused themselves on multiple occasions without any pressure or scrutiny
So they already have the votes without him.
Major policy makers (which the Supreme Court justices certainly are) should own zero investments that could be majority impacted by their choices. We shouldn’t even need to rely on voluntary self-recusals.
Isn’t it wonderful that the reforms necessary to eliminate corruption have to pass through the hands of those who benefit from corruption?
They should be allowed to own Thrift Savings Plan funds, a single primary residence, and nothing else.
Supreme Court justices should directly own NO stock at all.
Or indirectly.
Wait, so he actually knows how to recuse himself?
The occasional zig to his usual zag makes people think he has honour.
Shouldn’t Clarence Thomas recuse himself too? His luxury Winnebago probably runs on diesel with terrible gas mileage. Not to mention, it was probably paid for in part by oil execs too.
Harlan Crow is his master so ask him
I just want to know why he even bothered. He manifestly has no shame or morality, he’s not at risk of prosecution or physical harm either way, and he’s already made enough enemies that recusing now won’t save him in the event we manage to start with the guillotines later.
Is he just feeling lazy???
5/3 still goes on his handlers favor
What the hell? Did the oil companies forget to bribe him? Er, sorry. I mean did they forget to tip him?

“Well now that you’ve caught me I guess I’ll have to recuse myself.”
