Politics are in everything everywhere. You can’t excape it. Every decision you make has an effect. You can try to downplay it, but everything ultimately matters in ways you’re unlikely to completely comprehend. It’s best to assume everything you do, big and small, has some effect on the world and it matters.

I fart, a small amount of methane escapes into the atmosphere and that accumulates with all the other methane and eventually contributes to the climate crisis that asphyxiates some phytoplankton that contributes to producing the 98% of the oxygen on Earth, and that ultimately asphyxiates my niece in the future. Her genetic line dies and her progeny might have been the scientist that ultimately figured out time travel, breaking time space continuum into a traversable space, irreversibly changing the course of all of history, not to mention human history.

All because I didn’t hold in my fart, this never happens, and time traversal is never discovered, and all life ultimately dies with the heat death of the universe, instead of living immortally in an ever expanding loop of time/space across all of eternity.

Now extrapolate how important it is when you actually do something intentional. Politics are inevitable, it fucking matters. You can’t choose not to be a part of it. So fucking try and at least be intentional about it.

Yeah, fair. Again, it’s imho, that the Gentoo wiki still surpasses the Arch wiki (emphasis on humble opinion).

All that considered, it would be a considerable tragedy to lose Gentoo as a distribution in the Linux ecosystem. It offers something no other Linux distro does. Namely complete customization surpassed only by LFS (i.e. Linux From Scratch).

On a bit of a tangent, I personally think the recent popularity of AI points to not the superiority of AI/LLM utility, but rather to the enshittefication of modern search/documentation.

I think the Gentoo wiki, for all its flaws, is still a genuinely important part of the online documentation of how everything works. Sure, it’s terse, its verbose. But after the summary, don’t you eventually come to the thought “sure, but why? Why run that command? What does that mean? What does that ultimately do?” I’m not saying the Gentoo wiki answers this (ultimately this boils down to a CS/Math question), but still, the deeper question and the slightly deeper answer matters. It’s important that is documented, publicly somewhere. It is important you shouldn’t have to query an LLM to get that answer. Any wiki is better than some corporately gate kept LLM answer.

Hence, why I still think while imperfect, the Gentoo wiki is important to maintain.

It is my hope, that while perhaps you may not agree with my humble opinion, that you might at least sympathize with my view.

Gentoo is probably the most customizable of the Linux distros, as you can compile from source, adjust C compiler flags to optimize application speed, remove compiler level features if you don’t want/need them, and they support a LOT of computer architectures. Not to mention the Gentoo Wiki is a gem of documentation that surpasses (imho) even the Arch Wiki.

It’s potentially the best Linux distro for tinkerers up there with Arch Linux and NixOS.

Its almost as if DHH and those transphobes over at Hyprland(not to mention Lunduke, Luke Smith, Distrotube, and the various cadre of right wing little bissh boys on YouTube) all forgot about Linus Torvalds.

As far as I’m concerned Linux is for the left. But heck when an ideology like fascism is born out of grifting off left wing ideology (i.e. See Mussolini’s socialist/anarchist father), the right can just appropriate whatever they want…but they’ll still always be little bissh boys to me.

Fair Warning: Long rant ahead.

Great article, and it gets to the heart of something I’ve felt is becoming more and more prominent in the Linux and Open Source Community, and really any community. And it’s something we simply can’t ignore.

That is that you can’t separate politics from life. It’s everywhere. The author points out that Framework’s mission is to encourage right to repair and responsible consumption by discouraging planned obsolescence.

While right to repair might be popular in both left and right wing circles, that is only because both sides want control over their devices and to distance themselves from Big Tech. But their views on regulation with regards to the environment and social equity/inclusion are as far apart as the general right left paradigm is as a whole.

To be blunt, you simply cannot have normal people work under the same tent as crypto fascists, transphobes, and general right wing grifters, no matter how significant their individual contributions might be.

I personally am tired of these sorts of controversies being brushed under the rug by tech influencers like BashBunni and Brodie Robertson who in their coverage of Omarchy did not broach this topic even just to say that there is a controversy at all. It’s cowardice at best, and right wing apologism at worst.

Yes, there are particularly brilliant software engineers that are also assholes. And yeah, without those assholes, we wouldn’t have the technologies we have today. The mistake is thinking that they are brilliant because they are assholes. Another mistake is thinking that holding onto one productive asshole is better than hanging onto the good will and contributions of many normal people that still provide worthwhile contributions.

To be very frank, fuck that. I refuse to believe in the false dichotomy that in order to create good software we have to put up with bigots. If anything, their attitudes end up holding themselves and their colleagues back. We shouldn’t be asking ourselves, “How much less productive would that person have been if they had wasted time/energy on being socially conscious and empathetic.” And instead have asked “How much more productive and better off we all would have been had they been a more empathetic and compassionate person.” Because we’re all worse off when a colleague is being a bigot, and it’s in all of our interests to call it out when we see it.
