This feels like it has validated my decision to just use plain wireguard and hardcode my client list. It’s really not too hard to set up, barely different that configuring authorized_keys or ssh.
Check out my open source game engine! https://strayphotons.net/ https://git.sw0.com/frustra/strayphotons
I have been developing this engine on and off for over 10 years, and still have big plans.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerabilityEnglish
7·7 days agoWhat confuses me as someone who hasn’t written PHP in ages, is why is it supposedly so easy for a request to hit the memory limit? Does this only work on servers that accept user uploads and other large request payloads? People are saying a static PHP page can be exploited, but I don’t understand how if it’s behind even a basic nginx instance with default request limit of 1MB.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Motorola's GrapheneOS phones will launch in 2027 priced higher than Pixels
1·2 months agoI’ve actually seen that video before, and the main limitation is still the pixel transition time. It’s something like 200ms, so any sort of motion will have heavy ghosting. It’s definitely a huge improvement over most controllers though.
If all you do is read/look at static content, e-ink is great, and that’s why it’s used on all the e-readers. I wouldn’t want to be taking a video call on one though.
Tandem oled screens are also starting to become more of a thing, and that improves the usability in direct sun. But I don’t have any problem using my phone outside as it is. I’d rather just have a bigger battery than a worse looking screen for what I do.

3·2 months agoe-ink has terrible refresh rates and can barely handle color. It’s not really a comparable display tech to oled.

10·2 months agoNeat, I might have to set this up for myself. It sounds like it could get around some of the VPN blocking I’ve seen while traveling through airports.

1·2 months agoI find the easiest way to think about it is kind of like email. You can have an account @gmail.com and still send mail to other servers @outlook.com. Your posts and comments will be stored on your local instance, as well as any instances that are subscribed to the community. When you post to a community on another instance, I think the text will be stored on both instances, but image uploads point back to the copy on your local instance.

3·2 months agoI ignored all the email setup because I disabled signups anyway on my instance.
For DNS on my home server I use ddclient. It supports a ton of different DNS providers, so you can have your server automatically update its DNS record as soon as your IP changes.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Windows 11's Weather app reportedly uses 5x more RAM than macOS's Weather app, with ads to boot by XDA on August 9, 2026
5·3 months agoAhh, okay. I think the main confusion is I was kind of ignoring the code portion of the library, which is easily deduplicated like you said.
Any allocations done by the library running (opencl.so in this example) will still be separate per process though, unless the program is passing mutable shared memory buffers around, which could be the case if there’s IPC going on.
The point about memory usage being hard to measure is definitely true, especially since linux won’t actually consume memory until a write is made to the block, unlike Windows which preemptively allocates the full requested size.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Windows 11's Weather app reportedly uses 5x more RAM than macOS's Weather app, with ads to boot by XDA on August 9, 2026
42·3 months agoWhile shared memory is a feature in linux, it’s mostly used for inter-process communication and isn’t something that happens by default with shared libraries.
When a program loads a shared library, it creates a new instance of it that runs in the same memory space as the program.
In the example you’re using with KDE, that’s actually a system process that your program is communicating with, so it’s not quite the same as just loading a shared library (.so). Since new programs can connect to the existing system service, that can end up saving RAM by having a single system program service multiple user applications.
This isn’t really any different on Windows where the desktop environment (dwm.exe) is handling drawings and compositing for all user apps.
Edit: Based on the downvotes, maybe I got something wrong here. Maybe someone can comment on what? I’m happy to learn

Linux@lemmy.ml•GNOME Boxes Preparing To Deliver Much Improved Virtualization Experience
2·3 months agoOh that’s good to know. I’ve got roughly the same VNC setup with virt-manager, so I’ll have to try it out. I would get rid of this VM if I could, but it runs CI for my Windows builds. Since I daily Linux now, it’s the only way I’ll know if I break MSVC.
Selfhosting Lemmy has been surprisingly nice
This seems like a decent guide on how to set it up:
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-set-up-wireguard-firewall-rules-in-linux/
It’s very similar to the config I’ve got. The nat iptables stuff in step 1 is what enables wireguard to be used as a VPN exit node. (+ net.ipv4.ip_forward=1)
