  • Youtube itself has a download button I thought. I haven’t tried it since you have to be logged in to use it.

I remember that concert venues used to go absolutely berserk about people recording concerts, whether by video or audio. The Grateful Dead were a well known exception since they allowed audio recording, but they still prohibited video recording. There was a famous movie “Diva” about a guy who snuck a portable Nagra reel-to-reel audio tape recorder into opera performances to get bootleg recordings of a famous opera singer.

Today though, there are fancam vids of every concert uploaded to youtube immediately after the concert, or even livestreams during it. IDK what changed but I doubt it’s damaging the concert industry. Ticketmaster on the other hand is destroying the industry.

IANAL but KYC is a set of laws for banks and other regulated businesses. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_your_customer

Re ordering stuff pseudonomously, the main issue is probably payment, since credit cards are financial products and ARE subject to KYC laws. For other stuff, unless it’s regulated (some kinds of medications and hazmat, etc.), the merchant probably doesn’t care who you are, as long as they get paid.

I’ve sent cash in the mail on some occasions, mostly for small personal transactions, partly for privacy and partly for convenience.

  • KYC isn’t really an e-commerce thing, it’s more for financial institutions. Like for example, you have to show ID to open a bank account. Online shops will normally ship stuff to whatever address you give them and not ask for ID except for a few special types of product. Depending on their antifraud settings, you may have to call your credit card company to authorize shipping to that address, but the online vendor doesn’t have to find out your home address.

Product ratings and stuff: well why did you give them that info in the first place?

Yeah for info you’ve already given them, there’s not much you can do to get it back. You can of course be more careful going forward.

  • Data storage: you can do pretty much whatever, they won’t look at your stuff unless you do something that attracts attention. Of course encrypt it anyway.

Streaming: yes that attracts attention if you stream to the public. If it’s edgy or pirated content you can’t use the big providers. If it’s your private collection that only a few people know about, it’s like the situation with storage.

If no database, how is revision history maintained? Of course while there’s nothing wrong with someone deciding to write yet another self-hosted wiki, is there anything special about this one? “apt install gitit” has worked ok for me when I’ve wanted a low hassle wiki.

I was never able to get it to work reliably. For those mentioning XMPP, Jami uses a serverless approach with a distributed hash table instead. In principle it has better privacy but in reality it’s flaky. IDK for sure if the flakiness comes from the DHT but either way I gave up. I might try again sometime.
