  • I’ll be honest - while I would much prefer to use something like Element at work, it is for ethos reasons and not because it is a technically superior product from a user perspective.

I would love for this to draw attention and investment into Matrix/Element, but as it stands the experience is bad. Losing messages in groups due to version upgrades, group ownership and membership is an absolute nightmare, and video calls are miserable if it’s more than just a 1:1 call (and for personal use, it is terrible at game streaming, even using something like OBS to facilitate, but this is unimportant for business).

These systems need a lot more work and it sucks to see the Element CEO brushing the complaints under the rug as “growing pains.”

Teams sucks, but it is far more functional and consistent at this point in time. Can’t wait to fucking ditch it but the alternatives are not great at an enterprise level.

  • They literally go out of their way to tell you they aren’t.

They are what’s called “Source-First” according to their own terminology

One of the things they say in that blog post that I think misses the point is that OSI-approved licenses don’t “fail to protect the developer”, they are literally built to pass the rights of the developer to the user, where they belong. Open source protects the user, full stop. The side effect of this is that corps can take advantage as they are also users - and this is why I personally fight so hard for the GPL license as it does prevent big corps from taking and not giving back.

FUTO is “Source-First” until they switch to a license that prioritizes the user over the developer. I believe the FUTO company’s public image is of service to their users, which is fantastic, we need more of that, but their license only reflects that partially.
