  • Usenet is still kicking around? Wow! So if a place says it has 10 year retention, that means it has every usenet post for 10 years? That’s gotta be an enormous frickin’ library! And it might help me build my music library, which is pretty sparse since I can’t soulseek through a mobile connection (ports)…

My only real concern is software availability/usability on Android. I remember downloading from Usenet on desktop back in the day and it was very fussy.

I think this might be the way to go. Thanks for thinking outside the seedbox!

  • I’ve thought a lot about it, and I think it’s a combination of what your sensitivity is and what you’re used to seeing. There’s a natural point where your brain stops caring (or even noticing) quality improvements, much to the dismay of TV panel manufacturers. But there’s also that you will notice a degradation of quality until you re-adapt (if its above your natural threshhold).

Also, most TV shows aren’t so much about the cinematography/visuals (with some notable exceptions); 1080 is higher than I’d want for most TV shows, especially given the sheer amount of hours. (I think most Star Trek’s crunch down to 20+gigs at 720).

I’ll try to keep an eye on encodings I like and see if I can’t build a fan list of encoders.

  • Where do you source your harddrives from? And I guess you have some redundancies if you’re using used drives.

Your standards are undoubtedly higher than mine. HDR might be overkill (?), but I just find it very jarring when a scene that should be uniformly dark or black turns into bunches of little squares dancing around the screen. Do I need HDR to avoid that? I mean, yes, I do love the theater blacks enough that when Rogue One went from video outer space to film outerspace it melted my brain a little, so maybe I should look into that. But, overall, I think regular BluRay is the highest I’d want to target.

The system has really fucked itself with all the controls it has, especially for high quality streaming which they absolutely cannot guarantee AND they put a lot of restrictions on it as well.

I will speak up for having a physical library. It’s nice for guests to have something to pick up and hold. Of course, most of my guests these days are future and imaginary.

  • I get the impulse to create for fun, I really do. But once having created that art for fun, I can also see the impulse to want money from it, if possible, or to increase your social status. So as long as platforms offering reimbursement exist, they will have better and more content than free platforms.

And I’m also listening to what the YouTubers I personally follow say. One of my favorite youtubers is only youtube because TikTok stopped paying creators (and because algorithmically every video was a total crapshoot regardless of followers). A lot of creators I follow also make a big deal of Nebula, because that’s more a cooperative arrangement where they get a larger share of the profits…

  • Those videos people did “for fun” also had massive exposure, because there was money coming in to pay for the servers to push those videos out.

Peertube offers neither much exposure, nor any money, so why? Why spend time making videos for a very few people who you will never meet?

I don’t like capitalism or monetization, but what you want is a logical impossibility without a funding stream, and I doubt there is one that isn’t problematic to some degree.

Places where independence can thrive are webpages and podcasts–both much cheaper to produce and distribute.

  • Lineage OS is the ultimate deGoogle; I’m not comfortable with android at all given the influence Google has over its development.

LineageOS also can run on more phones; current Graphene ONLY runs on Pixels, soon to run on Motorola, but the Graphene hw requirements are HEAVY–only flagship phones have what Graphene requires, and I’m poor.

LineageOS is less secure, though, so I’d be sacrificing that.
