European guy, weird by default.
You dislike what I say, great. Makes the world a more interesting of a place. But try to disagree with me beyond a downvote. Argue your point. Let’s see if we can reach a consensus between our positions.

It’s very worth the try.
I worked with seriously hardware constricted machines for years and users on a learning curve.
KDE did not make my fancy when I tried it, when first moving from Windows, 20 years ago. Not then, not now. I know it has evolved a great deal but I can’t justify commiting so much hardware resources for the DE alone. And the obcession with the K’s are a bit of a pet peeve. I’m aware I’m getting some packages from it now and then and I have to eventually try it again but tomorrow is not the eve of such day.
I used Gnome until Gnome ceased to be Gnome and reinvented itself under that smartphone aspect. Mate forked and maintained that simple approachable look and feel.
XFCE is good but I missed the dual panel on the file explorer and eventually moved from it. It also tended to force me to mannually configure sound settings, keyboard hotkeys and other small things that otherwise were readily available.
I spent some time with Bunsen Labs installed on a machine and I enjoyed the look and feel. Conky was the jewel for me. But I had other users on that machine that didn’t adapt.
A short stint on Enlightenment. Not my cup of tea. Deepin was a disappointment. And I couldn’t motivate myself to manually configure a tile manager. I want a computer, not another hobby.
I used LXQT for some time but I felt it lacking. Very light and very fast but… Cinnamon is a nope for me, personally, but I have set it up for others and people enjoyed it, even more when coming from Windows.
But isn’t this the beauty of Linux? There is an option for everyone. Like you very well put it: you do you.
Doesn’t Mint just configures Cinnamon as default DE and leaves the rest alone, working from the stable branch? That’s my understanding.
I also run Debian. One desktop and three laptops. I run Mate, normally. The best compromise between useability and DE resource use. But I’ve used XFCE and LXDE.
My understanding is that Mint focus development of LMDE around Cinnamon but the other DEs are there nonetheless, untouched, like Debian releases it.
I always vote for boredom, which means I vote for Debian. It’s a well rounded, reliable and solid OS. It can be a bit dated on some packages but it rewards with very low maintenance. It works. It does what it is supposed to do, which is allowing us to run and use our computer as we see fit.
You want something a bit more up to date? Move to Mint. If Debian still appeals to you, move to LMDE.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Looking for a durable and repairable Linux laptop for business use
3·21 days agoIf you can, look for used Lenovo Thinkpads. Those machines are extremely compatible with Linux, out of the box, have good hardware profiles and, if used, can be sources really cheap and are very easily repairable.
I have two Thinkpads running Debian and the machines are brilliant.

We have something similar in my country but it is the State that issues it; it serves as an authenticator for State services and connected entities.
For online payments and the sort, there are several systems in place. One very useful is issuing single-use, prepaid, cards for online use.

I have never subscribed any of these streaming services. The pressure from friends was intense but at the end of the day I simply felt no need and even less appeal to it.
Nowadays, I hear those same friends how expensive it has become to keep all of these services to follow their interests and how the catalogue has been degrading.
I sincerely do not care.

The radio is Android and has an USB port on the panel. I plug the drive in, select music from the menu and the system loads and reads the files through the music application
Or it used to.

Regarding file names, yes, there are files with very long names but it worked fine the first time.
I have a folder that I remember working flawlessly that ceased to be read. Some songs have one word titles, others have three or four words in their name.
Regarding locale, I’m using Pt-pt, but the radio has that language available.

1·2 months agoConsidering the speed at which society and entertainment is changing and being produced, at some point it ceases to be “unlawful” to become legitimate preservation.
I’ve noticed an uptick on reruns of old series and films, especially late seventies, eighties and nineties. On films, I’m seeing even earlier production, going back to the sixties, and even of minor cinema like italian, spanish and french.
I have no illusions that these older productions are probably cheaper to license than current day productions, but recent production gets aired once, maybe twice, and is just gone.
Some will argue this is due solely to most not having rewatching value, others that it is predicated on the shorter attention span audiences have nowadays. Other arguments exist.
Regardless of those, not seeing current series being re-run, for me, is a sign that there is no interest keeping those works around.
It would be extremely satisfying if somewhere in the future some of those productions had to be rescued from private copies, as it has happened before with others.

0·3 months agoMore people carry a smartphone nowadays than those that have a computer at home. Banks are not stupid; they cater to the clientele and that clientele is shifting towards apps at an accelerated pace. There are a couple of banks operating in my country that don’t even have any other access but their app: no website, no physical locations.
I sincerely don’t know what is going on but after installing that package I was made aware that apparently the camera I have connected to my computer has a built in microphone. But which is apparently not useable as a recording device. So I have to wonder to where is that sound going.
Edit: something is seriously wrong. The microphone I have built-in to my headphones started working when I first added the package. After I disconnected the USB camera, it stopped registering on the system. And now it does not pick uo sound to record on Audacity.
