Open Source@lemmy.ml•Creator of free Adobe clones unveils open-source Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word replications — Autodesk tools and other subscription-based services may come next
8·19 days agoYeah, you should definitely try using it again - especially since the big 3.0 release.
Menus and tool names/functions still do not map perfectly onto Photoshop’s (it is its own thing after all, so why should it?), but it is a serious and sophisticated piece of software. Easily adequate for my professional reproduction work.
I switched to it from Photoshop two or three years ago and had to spend a few hours watching tutorials and reading the manual to make the transition. But now there is hardly anything I can’t do in GIMP at least as fast, easily and reliably as I could in Photoshop.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•looking for lightweight ghost blog alternativeEnglish
6·25 days agoGoToSocial supports RSS and is extremely lightweight. Posts and account also federate, and you can use Mastodon client apps on desktop and mobile to write posts (no web UI). Might be worth a look 👍
Mine is on pretty much all the time. Capchas are indeed annoying, but I’m choosing to see that as something which helps me to be more intentional about my use of the internet.
My bank and government portal don’t seem to care about it, even if my traffic is coming from a random country on the other side of the world because I’ve forgotten to route through one of my VPN’s domestic servers. Online freelancing platforms, on the other hand, have instantly banned my accounts, and I’ve had problems with corporate social media (which I try and use for my business).
Man, I would be happy if my parents used any computer.
I mean my business has no problem using it here in the motherland of the English language…?
Any time we talk to a client about it they are just happy to hear that we’re using software that doesn’t ingest their work into AI, crash in the middle of consultations, and produces working files that will be usable forever.
When did it suck?
I’ve been using it professionally for the last 3 years or so and it’s no worse for UX than Photoshop, the ‘industry standard’.
Both GIMP and photoshop are very sophisticated and technical software (although Photoshop is becoming less so I should add).
People who want a leaner set of tools should have a look at something like Tux Paint.
Using / is awesome. Even if you know where things are in the menu it’s usually quicker to just type the first few letters and smash enter. I use it all the time.
GIMP is shaping up to be (and actually already is IMO) the best editor out there for nondestructive work.
Why should they change the name just for the vanity of Americans who have a dual meaning for the word, and make it difficult for the whole rest of the world to find tutorials and documentation going back decades?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What is the best alternative to google maps, not for navigation, but for business discoverability and reviews?
24·3 months agoI’ve come full circle with this and concluded that the best source is local people. I’ve spent so much time messing around, hungry, on the internet. Now I try to just ask a random person or two for a recommendation.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•The EU is about to sell your most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel - European Digital Rights (EDRi)
25·3 months agoRight at the moment when the US has become the most unappealing place to visit as a European…

I’d be interested to try it out. How does it work installing this alongside an existing kernel on Debian?
