Two old N40Ls acting as NASs replicating onsite, a third micro server at a friends tunneling back to get replicated on, and a external hard disk to get periodic offline replication

Yeah I was talking about the old E7440s for instance. Really solid old machines, and you can still play old games. Minecraft even works at lower settings.
If you aren’t running anything more than Minecraft for games you can get old Dell Latitudes for next to nothing. The downfall is that SSDs are $$$ now.
I heard the Schedules Direct issue was fixed in v12 - has anyone tried it?
Just replace the batteries in the ups. They are almost always standard lead acid batteries. Take a pic of the wiring, swap them out, and you’re good.

4·25 days agoErrr…OpenSuSE always did this i guess because I’ve never been punted back to a login if Firefox (or anything really) crashed.
Most people I know run it behind a VPN, so 2FA is less critical.
That’s kinda my point. It’s really a materials and structure engineering problem. How do you automate house-building? Maybe you don’t need concrete at all, or only in strategic places.
You are correct. I watched one being built. It is only the walls, for one thing, they still did foundation, roof, interior framing the old-fashioned way. The concrete was trucked in on pallets and mixed on site and it looked like a ton of work, and the machine was always breaking, it looked like.
Honestly don’t know why they don’t print the concrete forms in plastic and inject concrete, injectable cast concrete has been a thing for like a hundred years. You could do your raceways and plumbing runs and all then fill.

2·2 months agoHow is this even a thing? Businesses can’t just have open network connections.
You could set up wireguard via stunnel maybe to port 22
For development? I’ve been using old Dell Latitudes. They are easier to work on than HPs, generally sturdy, and Debian runs great on them. You can get a used E7440 for next to nothing, and old RAM is still cheap.
I don’t know what this one has but Mint runs OK on it.
I’ve got a Acer Aspire One with an Atom in it that I still use. The form factor is awesome, I wish it was 64 bit and 4 gig though. Just use it for emergency firewall management as I don’t think it is getting updates.
And by outdated, like 2015. Old E7440s or even older work great with added memory. New battery and you have a nice laptop out of the e waste pile. The only weak spot are drives, SSDs are expensive so to stay cheap you might have to use old spinny in there.

Story of my life

I run pfsense with dyndns and a short TTL. It updates my DNS provider instantly when the gateway IP changes. For mail I got a cheap vps running pfsense again, tunneling back home via Wireguard and haproxy to link up connections. It is very stable and not as hard to set up as it sounds (and cheap).
