so, I’m self hosting for many years, with many many tools that i tried out and a couple that stuck.

not sure if this counts as weird, but I guess the most fitting example is the following:

i have a matrix server, which basically only a few relatives use to communicate with me, but I make heavy use of the bridges, so i don’t need to run those shit apps like Whatsapp on my phone.

anyway, i really dislike voice messages, because most of the time i read messages at the computer or in the tram and i don’t want to get headphones out, or simply don’t want to listen to five minutes of car noise to get the information off the words. so when my next productive episode comes I’m planning to set up a matrix bot that sends those audio files to some stt engine and returns a transcript to the chat. I’ll set up the bridge to ignore this bot, so the whatsnot user doesn’t get spammed.

for this my wife and i use grocy. we don’t really use the stock feature (which is probably the original main feature), bit is nice to do shipping lists by just clicking stuff that you already wrote and the shopping mode of the app is awesome. also the chores feature we use heavily, i just needed to tweak the ics export a bit.

consumer grade vs Enterprise grade. the letter are meant to run non-stop and are often just discarded due to upgrade, not due to problems.

and then rinse and repeat, until i get bored ^^

networking plays a big roll in such things. the more connections you have, the more possibilities. in my job that is normal as well ( not for donations, but it’s important to get a job)

that makes me want to set up a DO account just so i can delete it!

thanks for the clarification

maybe you can look into beeper. haven’t used it, but as i understand it’s a matrix server with all sort of bridges. I use the deposited version which works fine (at least as much as whatsnot allows it)

edit: just saw that somebody already wrote details about mautrix, which would be the self hosted solution.

compared to brick houses, or compared to cardboard houses? anyway… every time there is a new technology, it is terrible. just remember when the first digital cameras or the first flat screen monitors came.

the online shop version is not really available anyway so far, as far as i can figure out. but i understand that you should be able to directly deal with it via your bank. so your bank would be the professor, and that you anyway need :)

let’s see what the future holds, I’m sorry that it won’t help you now

did you check out wero? didn’t read into it myself yet much, but as i understood it should do this at some point. just not sure when.

the problem here is the control with tv remote, but afair there is an Firefox again that can fix this

sounds tricky because eventually it relies on some accessible api of the banks or other place the money is at.

btw, it would be helpful if you disclose in which country you are, i guess USA, but can’t be sure. this would change some aspects.

ok, seems that i forgot an important part to my message: /s

for me it was the fact that the desktop case i used for the server had the power button on top and it was big enough to be pushed in, when my cat walked over it…

first came a not of federated services to mind, not that’s really necessary foss. but what would be cool is foss firmware or really open api for any hardware you buy… Home “smart” appliances, printers, cars infotainment system, etc, etc

unfortunately the max length of comments is to limited to answer this question… ;)

i might be a more typical nerd. i have a phd in physics and took a bunch of computer science course out of interest/boredom.

but i never learned anything that is really related to hosting. containers were not really a thing at the time and most courses i took were much more fundamental, like basics of networking or cpu scheduling. programming a learned on the fly to solve a problem, never as actual task in itself (what is very typical in my field and leads to horrible program code/collaboration scheme)

ok. that game i know, but i don’t get how you incorporate a pc/tv application into it, because that everybody can see. or is intended to be used by the guy writing the postit?

if not for the forced installation of the official client, it would really be neat. with a telegram bridge i also have good experience, only a single hiccup, years ago.
