  • I didn’t know Luddites were an actual thing back in the day, so i guess i learned something today, but according to wikipedia these days it’s used as a term for people who are against new technologies in general, which isn’t accurate cause i’m not against new technologies in general, i just have an issue with genAI in particular. I don’t see how Amish would apply here either. Amish don’t have a problem with specifically genAI, they just reject most things from modern society, including a lot of technology.

  • If it’s better sure, but i just haven’t seen genAI doing anything that’s better than what we already had. I saw some replies talking about neural networks, but i was obviously referring to the newer iteration of LLM slop that we’re seeing now, and that has been nothing but problematic. I don’t think you can blame me for wanting it all to go away when i’ve seen everything around me turn to shit because of this tech. There’s more negatives than positives.

  • I had no idea these scripts existed, that’s awesome and i’ll have to take a look at tilemod in particular. I’ve tried niri a bunch of times but similar to you i feel like it’s too easy to lose windows. Not just on the same workspace, but i also wish other workspaces could be numbered so you can keep track of which workspaces have which windows on them. I know you’re supposed to use the overview for that, but i’m still not used to that type of workflow.

Another thing i would like is to have a more dynamic tiler style option where at the very least you can set it to have a window take up the full screen when it’s the only one on the workspace, and then split it side by side when two or more windows are opened. Mangowc’s scrolling layout supports this, and upstream niri could probably add this too, but it looks like this tilemod script can do the same thing.

  • For me personally it has gotten to a point where i kinda don’t care either way? I mean i do think more people using it is good, but as long as it does what i need it to do i’ll keep using it regardless. The way i see it even if linux becomes more and more popular, you can still feel quirky if you want by just using a more obscure distro. It still gets you the benefits of using linux, and if linux gets better support due to it’s popularity increasing you still get all the benefits, but at the same time you can also enjoy being part of a smaller niche community that is centered around these more obscure distros.

  • Helix is a solid choice tbh. I’m not sure if it works on NixOS, but you could always try something like Doom Emacs that comes preconfigured, similar to things like Lazyvim on the Neovim side. But yeah Emacs is a lot to take in and can be a pain sometimes. I actually just got done troubleshooting and making some changes to my config to solve an issue i had where simple things like scrolling up and down in a file was causing very high cpu usage. I ended up figuring out the issue with the help from a kind redditor, but i was kinda on the verge of considering a different editor if i hadn’t manage to solve it lol.

  • If you’re just using it to declare packages and some configs then yeah you could definitely run like a post-install script or something on top of a minimal distro. I’ve done this for a while when i was using Void. It’s get trickier though when you consider that nix can also lock your config at a specific version of all the software you have installed, which i don’t think can easily be done on the average distro. There’s also the rollbacks, though i suppose you could use btrfs for that, but i’ve never tried it.

  • Haha, yeah i’m just goofing around, but at the end of the day, just choose what is most interesting to you. It’s kind of ironic how i got into Emacs anyway, cause before that i chose to use Helix instead of NVIM, cause i didn’t want to bother spending so much time configuring it. Then i tried Guix, which is a distro that you configure in Guile Scheme, so Emacs felt like the perfect fit for that, but in the end i still spent hours configuring my Emacs lol.
