  • Depends on the definition. If we go by the definition a lot of users here seem to have, Linux itself would no longer be considered a FOSS project, which imo is completely ridiculous.

If we’re talking about literally vibe coded from the ground up projects where the devs don’t even know what the code inside looks like, yes maybe it should be removed or given a post tag once we have the feature.

Personally I prefer to keep a discussion going even with heavy AI coded projects, we’re living in interesting times and I am convinced to keep an open mind about what engineering will look like going forward and what doors it might open for the FOSS community despite its flaws and negatives.

  • The main concern is that attested passkey requirement will now be the easiest way to force specific software and hardware upon user. The GraphenOS example is a good one.

Exactly, and it doesn’t take any effort to come up with software that will make it impossible for most people to even consider doing things a different way than big tech wants them to. Download the wrong app, use the wrong OS, attempt in any way to reclaim your privacy, and all of a sudden you can’t be authorized to open your own banking app because of some bullshit “security” message. What option does that leave you? Either become a hermit and reject all technology with whatever cost that has for you, especially in a decade or two as technology transitions to something completely mandatory for everyone, or fall in line and use everything the way they intend you to.

  • The thing with that is, it won’t be implemented in a capitalist system where companies will collect most of the data they can so they can sell it to ad companies, business partners and government intelligence who are all willing to pay big bucks for it.

The reason it doesn’t happen is not that there was no engineering architecture design to prevent it, but because no company is going to willingly break the iron law of “profits above all else” that capitalism requires.

The antithesis to all this is free open source alternatives, like Lemmy itself for instance, that don’t collect more data than they need for the simple reason that they are not built with the goal of profit in mind.

So if we want a better web experience in the near future, the best thing you can do is convince people to use FOSS alternatives and create communities here instead of the giants like Reddit, Instagram etc.

  • If you mean for Reddit, you’re on one lol

If you mean for Pinterest, it depends on what you need out of Pinterest. If you want a federated social media for images then Pixelfed might be what you want. Karakeep and Pinry are much closer from a user experience perspective, but they seem to me for personal usage rather than a social one, though I can’t say for sure because I’ve never used either.
