I’m using Grapheneos Vanadium is great but has no ad blocking or content filters so I moved to something else.
I use a dns ad blocker which works great but the empty spaces arent removed with vanadium…

Honestly. In privacy pack they were a move away option. I was with nord and it was fine, just as proton is.
But anecdotally, Nords advertising strategy never sat right with me 2-3 years ago…

Thanks mate! I’d say mail/search/browsers slowly over the last 2 years, the rest since the start of this year. Graphene and Linux really accelerated it with me learning more and more.
Yeah I don’t disagree about your points at all, just to retort on them:
Yeah I do agree to some extent. I have however made sure with my mail this time I have a custom domain so I can drop Proton quickly if needed - Just a general point any new service I try, how easily I can egress and move on is a big selection criteria…
You’re right and I actually don’t feel comfy with this either and it’s been a bit of a contention point - I’ve tried setting up a local hosted Vaultwarden to be local only but I never was happy as I didnt understand the huge plethora of options.
I run keepass at work and it’s great, but conversely i’m also shit scared of losing my house to a fire then fucking up my backup!
I’m not opposed and would love to be less cloud reliant here but my anxiety is holding me back…
Fixed, cheers mate!

I had the same dilemma, after self hosting Immich for a while I decided on Ente.
There 3 main reasons why I went with Ente over Immich for my family photo/setup even though Immich is perfectly cromulent and easy to setup (and I have the infra)
1) Ente gives 3xS3 storage backups with compliance lock. I was a bit nervous being in charge of uptime/backups of my families photos, this offloaded it to Ente. Once you add in the same replication the self hosted cost increases a bit.
2) Following on from point 1. Immich doesn’t easily allow you to encrypt the photos at rest across users, or at least not at default. I didn’t want access to my dads photos.
3) One of my favourite use cases of google photos that ente has (and immich doesn’t without scripts) was automatically recognising a face of my daughter on all our families gallerys and moving them to a shared album.
I could get past point 1,2 but adding in 3, it made me just want to offload the hastle.
Theres 5 people using my Ente instance at £10 a month (£2 each). I also keep a running local backup of my gallery too.-----

Moved to Ente photos for this reason!

Proton Drive? I am skeptical about this one. I know Proton is more secure on paper. But it is like going from 1 walled garden to another.
I use Proton for a few services and I think this is an unfair comparison, while you’re right to be sceptical and Proton aren’t perfect, they’re much better than Google.
You need to move to a service that you can egress easy and proton does allow that.

I’d recently been trying a new browser and stopped using it as I thought it was related to the app.
I didn’t realise how bad the performance had gotten until I updated. Feels like a new phone.

Do you self host the sync server? Im using their infra atm but wondering if it’s worth switcing.

Luckily grapheneos allows a hybrid approach so allows just the lan subnet permission without the wider nearby devices permission.

Is there an alternative you can selfhost?

Yup…

I wonder if that’s an age thing. When I was at college i’d actively choose games based on length. Now it’s all about experience vs value.
I don’t want to grind through an Assassins Creed game, but i’d happily play a 8 hour streamlined story version of the same game.

I first had this when I was a kid and got an R4 DS cart. I used go get a handful of games a year and play them to death. Since getting the cart I barely finished any games.
Im only excited for this so my phone gets better desktop experience when docked.

Ditto to be honest. I refuse to pay for premium and sometimes do feel bummed out that the creators aren’t getting paid for my views (adblock). At least paying a little for nebula helps some high quality creators.

Yes, all self taught. I do some script writing in my job but it’s mostly mechanical engineering. I’ve had lots of people assume I work in IT.
Sorry never tried but heard you things
