I use migadu. It’s the closest you can come to running your own mail server without rubbing your own mail server. You must bring your own domains and you can create as many different mailboxes as you want.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•What do you do if you can't find a movie on torrents?English
131·3 days agoMassively depends on the private tracker. Some have a hard economy where you must seed every byte, but there are plenty of trackers that have bonus points based on seed time and torrent size which you can exchange for download allowances.
Some easy to get in trackers are torrentleech and seedpool, AFAIK both of them have open signups occasionally.
Yeah, specifically because of this line in the OP
decided to go with a standard that wasn’t as convoluted. . . Markdown
Hilarious
That’s a fantastic talk. I listen to it about once a year and it still holds up (as in the systemd haters are still mostly salty and uninterested in building a better alternative)
The only somewhat serious build-an-alternative-project I know of is Chimera Linux, see their FAQ: https://chimera-linux.org/docs/faq#what-is-the-projects-take-on-systemd
Lol, which one standard of markdown did your chatbot pick?

That feature didn’t exist when I started and I haven’t bothered to change it yet. Since this also needs support on all clients, it’s somewhat less portable than my solution.
Edit: Reason 2 I’m not sure how different clients handle the dynamic adjustments
I just started properly tagging new music at some point and now my library is largely tagged correctly.
For tagging I use kid3, great KDE application for that.
I also sort my music into a folder layout like this to know where I got it from and potentially upgrade the quality.
MusicRaw - Artist1 - Bandcamp - Album1 - Tidal - Album2 - Album3 - Youtube - ytrip album - Artist2 - Album1 (not moved to a separate source) - Tidal - Album2 - Album3 - ytrip albumI then have a script to loudness-normalize (come fight me) all music and write it to another subfolder.
A second script takes those normalized files and symlinks them into a structure like this:Music - Artist1 - Album1 - Album2 - Album3 - ytrip album - Artist2 - Album1 - Album2 - ytrip albumI tried switching to Picard, but for somewhat obvious reasons it doesn’t support my insane structure.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Dedicated admin account or normal privileged users?English
1·23 days agoIn my homelab I mostly don’t bother, most apps are only used by me anyways.
But you probably should separate it. And definitely make a separate account for other people who need admin access.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Renting Servers: Criticisms and Recommendations?English
181·1 month ago- Hetzner: I’ve rented a dedicated server with them for years and it’s been very solid. There are reports of people getting blocked during the first sign up, but I didn’t have that problem nor any other issue since. For bulk data storage their file share offering is also unbeatable imo, I’ve also used that for years and my Nextcloud files plus acquired media still live on such a share.
- Netcup: I have a small VPS here for monitoring, also no issues. It’s somewhat annoying that you need to take the server offline and run a media optimisation task when you delete snapshots (not sure how necessary it actually is, but you get a warning at least)
Some anti-recommendations as well
- Vultr: Years ago I wanted to get their very cheapest VPS offering, but that is only available sometimes in certain locations and at the time they didn’t tell you any of that before you signed up and deposited their minimum fee. I did get the money back though
- Contabo: My previous monitoring VPS lived here. After a while they declared the VPS I was using was a “legacy” product and wanted more money to keep running it. I feel this could have been handled with a forced migration of some sort.
- Digital Ocean: They just donated 3 million USD to a racist’s pet project financing other weird guys

Privacy@lemmy.world•trying to finally quit google for good. can anyone recommend a privacy focused email provider other than proton?English
2·2 months agoI like Migadu, I don’t know any other provider that’s just based on usage where you can use as many mail addresses, aliases and domains as you like.
Unless you have fiber from your ISP you need a modem to translate from the TV or phone cable to Ethernet.
I’m not a fan of openWRT. I’d recommend you go look at NUC-style x86 mini PCs with multiple network ports instead and install OPNsense. I find the web interface much more intuitive than LuCI
