Microsoft already recorded players in the past, so apparently yes, players are - in your words - dumb enough to continue to play Microsoft games (which includes Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, and so on).

99% of my game purchases of the last two years were on gog.com and itch.io, so there are still some ways. However, I agree Steam is a monopoly. You basically have to ditch most triple A gaming to leave Steam behind. But if you’re willing to be more flexible with what games you play, gog.com & itch.io are still quite feasible and they’re both DRM free as far as I understand.

A simple sync would show you when it actually finishes. However, it has system-wide effects. Perhaps KDE could lobby for a similar action to become available that is limited to e.g. a specific process id?
