  • The short answer is: no. You can’t do this.

I spent a long time researching this after my partner insisted on having a TV in the house. The solutions you’ll see online range from “just leave it disconnected from the web” to “use a computer as the default connection”.

I opted for the latter solution. The former is a bad solution because you’ll, at the very best, be stuck with a shit interface full of ads and useless apps. Which computer you use depends on your budget and needs, but I simply don’t see a better solution than that, right now.

  • Right, but some people do live in the EU.

I understand the argument is that it would be too much work to make the browser just for people that live in the EU, but building features that most people don’t want to use seems to be their M.O, anyway.

And also, if people outside get jealous that they get to use genuine extensions in their browser, perhaps they could put pressure on apple to do the right thing. Open source is basically dead on ios, so it’d be great to see a bigger player try to do something about this.

  • I’m not sure that’s completely true, but you might prove me wrong; As far as I’m aware, the issue is that a browser must be rendered in WebKit in order to be available in the appstore.

For lucky users in the EU, that needn’t be such an issue any more.

In addition, I’d like to see more popular apps offered outside of the appstore to get around apple’s illegal bullshit. With luck, applying more pressure worldwide, as users outside of the EU see how good it could be if you don’t allow the oligarchs to always get their own way.

  • there used to be a time when a business had to have a proven product/service that brought consistent value to the customer.

Really, I think that time is long gone. There’s faster, greater money to be made by selling a vaporware future than there is by selling an actual product.

2026 businesses are looking back at the old fashioned model of selling things to customers and laughing out loud.
