12·1 month agoVintage audio equipment. It’s purpose built without gimmicky features, high quality, high performance, and built to last with discrete components and service manuals. Really it doesn’t have to be vintage, but it’s usually the old stuff that prioritizes these traits. I usually play local files (mp3/flac) over a bluetooth DAC but vinyl is fun once in a while. The same living room system gets used for movies and whatever else too.

10·1 month agoSame with my car. I think it’s more important than ever to learn how to fix things. “Buy a new one” is becoming less and less viable for certain types of products if you value longevity, privacy, independence, finances, sustainability, etc.

politics @lemmy.world•FCC abolishes gigabit speed goal, suggesting it is unfair to slower technologies
410·2 months agoI’m not entirely upset at this. It seems like any advances in computing and network speed these days are used as an excuse to collect more data and make software more inefficient. Also from a global warming perspective, if you’re into that, it may be time we start looking at things from a sufficiency standpoint rather than efficiency.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•would you wait for the Grapheneos-Motorola phone or buy a new pixel now?
11·2 months agoAside from how the phones actually compare, I think it’d be good to show there is a market for a factory graphene phone. I want companies to see the difference (financially) when they start taking privacy and other pro consumer ideas seriously.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Which search engine do you use for what?
5·2 months agoI often add the word “forum” to my searches to help get some actual human discussion instead of ad farming AI slop articles. Seems like the only way to figure things out these days.

1·3 months agoI’m fully ready to push back (heck I don’t have a choice, since my devices don’t support this shit), however it’s troublesome that most of the population doesn’t care because pushing back is inconvenient. I think being a corporate & government slave is more inconvenient, but a lot of people can’t connect the dots or see where society is going

I agree with that and care very much about privacy, but for me there’s a big difference between privacy and security-it’s why I’d take an out of date linux install over freshly patched windows 11-I think that in the right use case one could argue CVEs aren’t relevant so long as they’re not being exploited. Obviously though an up to date linux/graphene/whatever install is the best of both worlds.
I think a lot of these views for me were born from an anticonsumption standpoint. Some corporation decides to stop releasing software updates for a device, on their terms, and now I’m supposed to open my wallet? Nah. I used an out of date phone for 6 years and nothing bad came of it, but again it’s down to who you are and how you use it.
