Anyone even considering trying for the $5000 should ask themselves what happened to the $2000 in tariffs money, the $3000 DOGE refund, or the $1776 America 250 payout. (I might have mixed up the first two.) He already owes the American people so much.
Hey, remember that scene from Braveheart? I can’t remember what exactly Mel Gibson said. He was making demands of some king. Part of it involving going to every home and apologising. Trump owes the American people at least that much. A true hat-in-hand apology at their front door. You’ll never see it though.

Let’s be absolutely clear, they didn’t just kill third-party apps.
And to be fair, third party apps often bypassed their ads. So Reddit had a legitimate grievance there. The apps were contributing nothing, were collecting money from Reddit users, and the app I’m going to talk about, Apollo, actually had a recurring subscription if you weren’t one of the first ones to buy it.
So Apollo was kind of the big dog and so Reddit basically went after them primarily. After the conversation did not go well for Reddit, Reddit’s CEO started telling everyone that the Apollo dev tried to extort Reddit. The Apollo dev did make a joke about money changing hands, but he absolutely did not extort Reddit, and he brought the receipts. He transcribed the call… for those who didn’t have time to listen to the actual recording, which he also shared.
With a big pie in their face, Reddit reacted by killing third-party apps entirely. And it was mostly based on a lie.
Reddit is run by the Epstein class anyway. Heck, I was banned just for suggesting longer prison terms for people who prey upon children. I guess they took that as a threat against their leadership? And/or certain politicians who they support (or who support them)?

I feel like they’ve moved the goalposts a lot on millennials. Gen X has always been ~1965-1979 or 1980. Then we had Gen Y. I can now see how Y became Y2K which became Millennial, but at some point we were calling kids born with a 20- instead of a 19- in their birth year “millennials” (as in, they were born in the new millennium). I think what ultimately happened was, Gen Y basically said “no we get that claim because Y → Y2K → Millennial”, and we all just agreed. Now 1980-1999 is millennials and 2000-2019 is Gen Z… as I understand it.
Thing is, generations are like astrology, there’s no real scientific basis behind it, especially when people display traits from multiple generations.
The boomer thing reminds me of “boomer shooter” which means like DOOM. I guess it was Boomers who made them… Not sure. But they were played by our generation. Boomers didn’t have shooters. Boomers weren’t raised on video games and most of them don’t understand video games.

Gen X and I can’t afford to retire. But hey, the article got me doing math and it blows my mind that there are 46-year-old millennials out there (if you accept the definition as 1980 and say 1980-01-01 counts).

Agree 100%. I’ve been in some tough conversations with fellow LGBTQ+ allies over my participation, however minor, in the Harry Potter fandom. I’m seeing a lot of “it’s fine if you liked it before we learned JKR was a bigot” but I’m also seeing a lot of people with the same story as mine — discovered the franchise back then, enjoyed it, but do not like what JKR is doing to the trans community — but also criticising me for the same. Like it’s “fine” (to some extent?) if you’re trans and JKR betrayed you, but if you’re not trans, you’re held to a higher standard as an ally. I dunno. It’s confusing. I will not, however, back down from my claim that I enjoyed the first four (+HBP) books and the first four films before I learned she was crazy… and that this year I rewatched Philosopher’s Stone in 4K (and yes, it holds up).
All that being said, the fears and concerns in the trans and LGBTQ+ community are valid. They may be jerks about it online, but as an ally, I can only ever strive to be a better one. I can’t change what I liked in the past and I will not deny it, even to history revisers. But I can change what I do in the present, and I can always strive to Do Better.
I don’t like the new Harry Potter series because of why it exists. JKR was disappointed the stars of the film series did not share her transphobic views, so she immediately made a point to recast Hermione and to make her completely different from Emma Watson’s portrayal, as Watson was her most outspoken critic. She didn’t make Hermione a Black girl to be inclusive, she did it to distance Watson from the character because Watson isn’t transphobic. JKR further muddied the waters by saying that Dumbledore was gay and always had been (though no evidence of this is in the books — he’s essentially treated as ace, as in, asexual, as in, his sexuality is undetermined and probably doesn’t exist, which is fitting as the entirety of his character’s relevance is mentorship to an adolescent boy). When the rest of the cast basically stood against her, she set out to recast all of them.
The new Harry Potter series looks like it might be fun, but I cannot in good conscience watch the new series. There are so many more things out there to see. Watching it with infinite time would be one thing, but I haven’t got that, have I? I was fully grown when Philosopher’s Stone came out, and I had no intention of seeing it. A coworker slipped me a bootleg copy (while it was still in cinemas!) and I watched it… twice. Then I went and saw it in cinema. I then collected the books and read them, and watched the movies, though I didn’t like it after the fourth one. It stopped being fun. I’m currently reading Dungeon Crawler Carl, and by that I mean, of course, I’m listening to the audiobooks. I’m in the second to most current book, the seventh one, and it’s still fun. It’s gotten serious, but it’s still fun. And, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, Matt Dinniman (the author) and Jeff Hays (the audiobook narrator) are not bigots. That’s the magical adventure series I’m looking forward to.

I saw someone discreetly advertising it up here the other day and now I’m a bit skeeved out by it.
But also, I don’t use “social media”, per se. I like forums. The Reddit formula was fine until it wasn’t. Lemmy is about as social network as I get.
For those curious… use a burner email, and tread carefully.

I got no sympathy for people who sell pirated games, though. Selling mod chips or selling modded Switches is one thing. It’s a service many people can’t do. A Switch has to be opened and soldered, though IIRC the OG was easier to do, but has since been patched. Compare this with the 3DS that anyone can jailbreak in minutes. But selling pirated Switch ROM dumps that they probably didn’t even dump themselves? Or even if they did. If I’m gonna pay, my money’s going to go to the people who made the game… not a bloody Reddit moderator.

I’ll bet he would, and I bet I know what angle he’d go for, too.

Certified billionaire, certified paedophile. (And we’re not sure about the first one.)

She wasn’t even blocking a roadway. She was turning around. She saw something she shouldn’t have, or they thought she did, because she was near enough to it and they assumed she saw it. She probably did see it, since she was trying to get out of there. Either way, she was leaving and they still killed her.

What I have is a Mac mini (M2 Pro, 16GB RAM) and a MacBook Air (M2 base, 16GB RAM). The desktop (the mini) would be absolutely overkill, but I don’t want it doing a bunch of stuff when my wife and I are trying to actively use it as a server.
The last Intel box I had shit the bed and I no longer have it. I had a 4th gen Xeon (1231-v3) with 16GB DDR4 and a 3GB Radeon 280. If I still had that tower, I’d start with that for sure.

Fair. But, in your/their world, how does one seek the information? If they aren’t allowed to ask, should they then just ask AI, or read an article otherwise written from Reddit/forum posts?
To ask it another way: How do you justify a person being curious and asking in good faith if an AI could just farm the post later? I think, but I’m not sure, that Lemmy has some kinds of safeguards against that? I know with Reddit it was wide open. I used it for the better part of a decade, wrote long-winded posts full of information; I know AI was trained in part based on my posts (among millions of others).

Thanks. The more I see, the more I realise I should just leave the AI stuff out. AI and gaming were outlier possibilities anyway, though I’m way more interested in gaming than AI. Right there with you on AI ethics. I don’t like seeing them steal art and rip off artists, but they can be good at tracking down solutions on various forums. At least, they do it faster. But it sounds like running one might be outside my budget, so I’m more interested in running services, and light/classic gaming, since I have an Xbox (Series X).

If I was looking for content for a blog or a video, would it be such a bad thing? Getting a lot of good information. Not sure what’s wrong with that.

I’ve been trying to convince people for the last 10-15 years that Google is no friend to the open source community. It’s been difficult and sounds self-serving as I do it from Apple devices and make no attempt to hide or conceal that.
AOSP and chromium are open source projects. What Google actually puts out — Android and Chrome — are not. They take the open source foundations, and they build upon them with closed-source components. They’ve always done this. AOSP does not have any Google apps either (sometimes called GApps) as those are not open source. Browser and Mail are not Chrome and Gmail, though the former may be a chromium-based browser and the latter may be capable of retrieving and sending through Gmail (much like Apple’s mail app can).
Android is not an open source ally, and macOS is kinda, sorta, not really based on UNIX. But we could flip the script and say that Apple is a friend to open source because macOS is basically UNIX (via OS X and NextStep), while Android isn’t open source at all. I can already see the pitchforks being sharpened. Both positives are technically true from a certain point of view (like Vader having killed Anakin Skywalker, to use Obi-Wan’s example for this turn of a phrase), but the negatives of both are more accurate. Because to really be a friend to the world of open source (and FOSS, and the more preferred licenses), you can’t just half-ass it, you gotta go all the way. Apple isn’t there and neither is Google.
F-Droid is what the Android Market (I’m that old, and older) should have become, with Google offering a repository you can add to F-Droid. Google Play Store is trash and pretty much always has been, and I say that as someone who deals with the App Store (which is also trash) every day.
Of course I also root for GrapheneOS, up until they say you can only use their OS with a Pixel phone. If I want iPhone 11 performance, I’m not spending iPhone 18 Pro money on a Pixel 11, I’m gonna either get iPhone 18 Pro performance, or, if I want Android, I’m looking at the Galaxy S line. I’m not even looking at Pixel and its sorry ass, seven generations behind Tensor line. Bad enough Snapdragon struggles to keep up with Apple silicon. Does Tensor even try?
But nah, I wanna see GrapheneOS do what Andy Rubin did. Make Linux run on phones. But make it run on any phone. I guess I don’t mean “including the iPhone.” That would be nice, but Apple isn’t unlocking that bootloader. But we should expect a free, open source alternative to Android to run on any hardware, not just the one run by the one causing the problems. (So what standards do I aspire my iPhone to? I want it to be more like the Mac, with a terminal and ability to install apps from anywhere.)

Right. I still pay for streaming music because music is still generally all available on each service. If you pay for Apple Music or Spotify, you pretty much get everything. Exceptions generally happen across all services, and they’re rare. Country artist Garth Brooks, great example. He was briefly on Amazon Music for a minute, but AFAIK isn’t on any streaming service. Most stuff most of us like, if it’s on one of the big music streamers, it’s on all of them. I still prefer to acquire FLACs of what I really like. I have most of my favourites on my Plex server. I also have them on my desktop PC. And I have them on an old Android phone’s SD card.
I could go fully offline with my music, but I don’t want to. I love music and I don’t mind paying. If movie/TV streaming had the same idea, I’d support that, too.
I think a better example of your situation was exactly what happened with Yellowstone. That was made by Paramount, but it wasn’t available on their streaming service, because they wanted it exclusive to their cable TV channel. That’s why all the stupid spinoffs exist, because those are on the streaming service. Paramount owns all of it but it can’t put all the Yellowstone content in one place. Personally, I liked it until Kevin Costner dipped out. I’m curious about some of the newer spinoffs, but the whole situation has just left a bad taste in my mouth, and there’s better stuff out there. Also, Taylor Sheridan’s work has gotten so diluted over the years. He spread himself too thin. His movies, Hell or High Water and Wind River still hold up, as do the first couple seasons of Yellowstone (I’d say, until the big assassination attempt season ending). None of the spinoffs I’ve seen were very good. I watched the first standalone, and the first season of the second one (both named after years).

This. Specifically, if you want to do things like sync playlists and listen stats between different devices (e.g. Android, iOS, Windows, macOS), you want a dumb client that connects to a server that handles all that. I do it on Plex but Navidrome looks awesome.

It’s actually an ad and marked as such.
But let’s unpack this bullshit right here. Everything is going up. Someone wants to download something for free because they’re getting squeezed on all sides. So let’s not only charge them for content that’s already been paid for and made all its costs back, we’ll bump up the price every year or so, and use that money to advertise our rising price service to people who are struggling to make ends meet rather than just lowering the price.
That’s without even getting into who owns Paramount and what their politics are.
Trump saying his stooge won’t let you down basically tells me that they support the high gas prices, the high RAM prices, and the degradation of US infrastructure. Hopefully the people of South Carolina see that and tries to turn their state blue (or do you say purple when it used to be red?).
