  • This does not look like a counterpoint to me, but a yet another example that experience, knowledge, the history must not be forgotten, otherwise it may be rewritten by those who have time and power, and filled with lies, backed by propaganda, and damaged someone’s life.

    Information vacuum… - A situation where a lack of reliable information leads to speculation or the spread of rumors. It often occurs during crises or fast-moving events when official communication is absent or delayed.

    I am sorry to know that… Yet, please do consider mentioning your evidence in the Wikipedia pages or a blog post, so that other people would learn from it, and make less mistakes in the future…

  • Every single LLM/AI vendor works hard and dreams for humans to depend on them… When you have a dependency, you outsource certain task on it, and in case of AI, it means agentic, generative, plagiaristic, inhumane…
    Results of these tasks may not be correct, desired, valuable, and degrade cognitive attitude and damage accumulated knowledge…

    Eventually, AI-Users may not know any other way than using an AI-for their task, paying for it, and atrophying their life even further…
    In the end, such people may become manipulatable and controllable with their environments monitored and limited on-demand by authorities…

    When Chrome 147 launches against an eligible profile, the omnibox - the address bar at the top of the window, the most visible piece of real estate in the entire browser - renders an “AI Mode” pill to the right of the URL field. A reasonable user, seeing “AI Mode” sitting in their browser’s most prominent UI element in 2026, with the well-publicised existence of on-device LLMs in Chrome and a 4 GB Gemini Nano binary already silently installed on their disk, is going to draw what feels like an obvious inference - that the visible AI Mode is using the on-device model, that their queries stay on the device, that the local model is what powers the local-looking surface.

    Every part of that inference is wrong. The AI Mode pill in the Chrome 147 omnibox is a cloud-backed Search Generative Experience surface - every query the user types into it is sent over the network to Google’s servers for processing by Google’s hosted models. The on-device Nano model is not invoked by the AI Mode UI flow at all. They are entirely separate code paths - the most visible AI affordance in the browser does not use the local model the user has been silently given

  • Roger that. Thank you for the clarification that you meant the actual term, and not just the fact of no mandatory payment and it having an the source available for public.

    I get what you mean, yet frankly, I do not believe such projects may be always free that are supposed to always be up-to-date for another system they have no official relation to, and keep it as a responsible hobby other people depend on.

  • It is free and open-source on Desktop at this moment.

    Keyguard is a commercial app and unlocking a premium funds its further development and supports me (Artem Chepurnyi) directly. As of right now, only the Android builds distributed via Google Play store have main features locked behind a paywall, other distribution channels have a build with everything unlocked.

    Source: https://keyguard.dev/docs/premium/

    But it makes sense to pay for it, since Bitwarden is a constantly changing system and these projects based on it must always be up-to-date with their API changes, too. This is time and worry consuming, and should be compensated.

  • Of course they do, absolutely.

    If it helps/supports/carries a disabled/invalid miraculous Individual, Person, Human to express themselves better, communicate easier, feel themselves more humane and alive, please do install and try it!

    Yet, at this point, I do not believe AI-driven tools for disability should be installed by default to everyone, as if suggesting all people are too disabled by default.

    Healthy People should be proud and appreciate they are not, and do get yourself together, and do better. We deserve to be better.

    Here, I do get what I mean, since I am myself physically mute, a car accident, which I rarely expose but recently mentioned:
    - https://gist.github.com/serious-angel/738ff60d2cab20ae35c02fd6d0499047 (Lobsters staff ruined my reputation, do not respond, and I have no idea why…)

    The mute trait is quite a challenge… and one of these is being constantly called out as “AI” or “bot” for my formatting or effort/time I invest into textual messages, I believe, in hope to stay more social…

    The most recent example at Lemmy:
    - https://lemmy.world/comment/26100133 (You’d think at these days, with so much of awful LLM/“AI”/noise, a dear humane attitude should prevail…)

  • Wonderful day!

    May I ask how did you install these programs?

    For example, AnyDesk. The underlying service might be installed from the official repository DEB package.
    As we may see, in the following package:
    - https://deb.anydesk.com/pool/main/a/anydesk/anydesk_8.0.4_amd64.deb

    There’s a standard “postinst” script inside that installs the service:

    "postinst" preview
    #!/bin/bash

    set -e

    command_exists()
    {
            command -v "$1" > /dev/null 2>&1
    }

    if [ "$1" = configure ]; then

            INITSYS=$(ls -al /proc/1/exe | awk -F' ' '{print $NF}' | awk -F'/' '{print $NF}')

            if [ "systemd" == "$INITSYS" ]; then
                    if [ -e /etc/systemd/system/anydesk.service ]; then
                            rm /etc/systemd/system/anydesk.service
                    fi
                    cp /usr/share/anydesk/files/systemd/anydesk.service /etc/systemd/system/anydesk.service
                    systemctl daemon-reload
                    deb-systemd-invoke enable anydesk
                    deb-systemd-invoke start anydesk
            elif [ "init" == "$INITSYS" ]; then
                    if [ -e /etc/init.d/anydesk ]; then
                            rm /etc/init.d/anydesk
                    fi
                    chmod +x /usr/share/anydesk/files/init/anydesk
                    ln -s /usr/share/anydesk/files/init/anydesk /etc/init.d/anydesk
                    update-rc.d anydesk defaults
                    invoke-rc.d anydesk start
            fi

            command_exists update-menus && update-menus
            command_exists update-desktop-database && update-desktop-database
            command_exists xdg-desktop-menu && xdg-desktop-menu forceupdate
    fi

    Since the script is copied into “system” path (not the User’s “/etc/systemd/user/*”), it is executed by “root” by default, unless specifically specified in the service itself (e.g., directive “User=”).

    Just in case, “enabling” in marvelous Systemd is merely a symlink added to the directory the OS probes on boot. You should see the symlink location on service '(dis-)enabling".
