They/them preferred, but I won’t be mad if you forget :). Retired programmer. Many health conditions. If I’m uncharacteristically grumpy, I probably have a migraine.

  • Same here… what prompted this research was an event that caused me some anxiety. I searched the keywords “sunshine” to find the song “walking on sunshine”. I noticed it came up with health document PDF results and even photos containing sunbeams. I’m like wait… how did it find those files?! I was horrified and went to check their privacy policy, only to become even more horrified lol

    I’ve been dragging my feet migrating out of Dropbox but now I need to get out ASAP. Really lit a fire under me. 10 year paying customer btw

  • That’s the problem with screenshots of other social media platforms; we don’t have any of the buildup or history leading up to this. I’m completely out of the loop on this entire thing. It’s like seeing a 9 layer meme that builds on all the other memes posted this week without context

    Imagine seeing a post making fun of lämps and you’re just like… what about lamps? They’re bright?

  • They wanted the ECG recordings. Since it came in fancy PDF form it added some legitimacy. They didn’t care about anything I said at all, but being able to show actual evidence like that was a big deal. Just like, hey this is actually real, stop ignoring me.

    I dunno if other heart rate monitors would give the same level of data. It was also good for setting up an alarm when my heart rate goes above 190bpm (dangerous), but I don’t need it anymore because I know what that feels like now. I still keep it around just in case though.

    Mine’s probably a unique case though. But I also saw a study that 7 people around the entire world got diagnosed with atrial fibrillation from the watch’s warnings, which is a tiny number overall; but I wasn’t included in that study either so they probably missed others too.

  • I found a Stack Overflow thread where people discuss this and actually test it. Further down the page is a 2026 test. The results are it’s basically the same, very little practical difference in normal usage. If you’re auto saving a file every 30 seconds you will not notice any difference between XML and JSON.

    Personally, I like XML more for data files like this. I would not reach for JSON as my first thought for deserealizing a complex object hierarchy. Stuff like, a polygon can have a drawing of type vector which can have n paths which each have exactly 2 points… easy to store and validate in XML. Quite messy and complicated in JSON.

    <Drawing type="polygon">
      <Line color="#fed1aa">
        <Point x="6" y="7" />
        <Point x="69" y="420" />
      </Line>
    </Drawing>
