63·1 month agoSometimes IOT devices don’t make rational sense to install. This is up there with “smart” lightbulbs in terms of creating a vulnerability through convenience.
When I 3d print a plastic phone mount for my bike, that doesn’t make the base bike any easier to steal. This does make your house less secure, even though it adds utility.

64·1 month agoElectronic mechanisms are more prone to people being able to be able to access areas without evidence of tampering using simple scripts from the internet, whereas lockpicking is not employed by most burglars. (And as stated previously, level of commitment is greater when destruction is involved, which deters most.)
Having a noisy break-in also means you are more capable of responding if the need arises.
If all you care about is deterrence, just own a shotgun and have a loud dog at home.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is there any way to watch or download age restricted youtube videos on debian 13.7 without a google or youtube account?
3·2 months agoNo, not at the current moment. Hypothetically someone could set up an array of anonymous Youtube accounts to use explicitly for authentication challenges similar to how Aurora handles Google Play Store downloads, but currently that service doesn’t exist for Youtube.
You would need to find an anonymous google account, or create a burner.

Privacy@lemmy.world•trying to finally quit google for good. can anyone recommend a privacy focused email provider other than proton?English
2·2 months agoIf you have a custom domain you can make as many as you want.
Isn’t the logic behind that is that TOR’s original purpose was for secure, untraceable connections between military/intelligence personnel? If the traffic only composed of people working under the US government and their loved ones, it would be rather trivial to isolate the traffic and make a logical guess of who’s talking to who. Opening it to the public was not something done as a honeypot for people to encounter, it is a requirement for the system to function as anonymous communication for all users.
As for why nodes are mostly hosted in 5 or 14 eye nations, consider where the funding for nodes is (and what would happen if you hosted one in a nation actively trying to strangle TOR traffic).

I don’t think you’d want to do so as a university student unless you want to share the same fate as Aaron Swartz though.

281·3 months agoThey don’t have custom firmware because it’s locked down, not because of their product line’s existence.
If iPhones were as easy to mod as Pixels, then the sheer amount of potential users would probably mean a custom firmware would be swiftly developed.
So yeah, we should name and shame them, even if Apple has no interest in opening the gates.
