2·5 days agoYeah, I know about LibreOffice as I use it myself. That’s why I was wondering why OpenOffice was brought up.

3·8 days agoWhat do you mean by switching to open-source kernel modules?
Some time ago, the entire NVIDIA driver stack was proprietary, but recently the kernel modules have been made open-source for new graphics cards. Only older GPUs still use closed-source modules. If I’m not mistaken, GPUs from the 2000 series and newer have switched to open-source modules.

9·9 days agoI would recommend not using any software from FUTO. It is not open source, one of its founders is a fascist, and they have thrown money at OSS projects just to have their logos displayed on their pages, without following proper donation procedures. GrapheneOS has also stated on several occasions that FUTO has actively attempted to smear their reputation and harm their infrastructure. I can provide sources for all these points if anyone needs them.

3·9 days agoSure. I used openSUSE as my daily driver for a couple of years, and after switching to open-source kernel modules, a common problem was when the modules would be updated but their versions wouldn’t match those of nvidia-video or other NVIDIA packages. Or when the kernel would be updated but the kernel modules would lag behind (which happened even more often.) Because of this, some components would get updated while others wouldn’t, leaving you with dGPU drivers that didn’t work.
I had to roll back the system using snapper and lock packages until the problem was resolved.

1·9 days agoDon’t spread misinformation. AirVPN was not audited. Even more, they’ve been refusing to undergo a security audit for a few years now.
As for ProtonVPN, I don’t want to defend Proton, but their ad on that far-right YouTuber’s channel was a mistake. They took it down as soon as users pointed it out and apologized. Andy’s still an asshole, though.

3·9 days agoopenSUSE is good as long as you have an AMD GPU. For users of NVIDIA GPUs, openSUSE is a headache because of the constant mismatch between the open kernel modules and the rest of the driver packages. I had to use a script that checked whether the packages were matching each other before updating. Otherwise, the system could break for weeks until the drivers in the repository were updated.

62·11 days agoCopyingy my other comment here about e/os:
e/os is the worst “private” mobile OS. It is just a LineageOS with a bunch of proprietary crap. Their STT even uses OpenAI as a provider.
Also Murena founder has made some diabolical claims about exploits about how they aren’t developing their OS for “pedos”:
However, we don’t have a “hardened security” approach, we aren’t developing a phone for pedo(censored) so they can evade justice.

I’m really tired with the flood of slop-coded projects in OSS and Linux communities here on Lemmy. There should be a rule to disclose the use of AI in the title at least, so I won’t waste my time on checking the repo only to find out it was mostly written using Claude.
