  • That was my first thought too, but I can’t really tell why, the display connector appears to be locked in place fine. It could just be a crappy design though because that cable runs through the heatsink, and the connector is partially blocked by one of the heat pipes so possibly thermal damage to the wire or connector?

Even just trying to re-seat the connector would require removing the entire heatsink/fan assembly which is very annoying. It’s not beyond my ability, but I asked the question about running it as a server to avoid that hassle lol, I’d much rather tinker with software than hardware it seems

  • So I actually have a setup similar to this, but with a mini pc (m.2 to 6x sata adapter, each one connected to a 4tb ssd - well eventually, only 2 are populated currently) and I did use a dremmel to cut through the metal top of the case and it was still a horrible sharp mess, even after I tried sanding it down. I ended up 3d printing a custom i/o shield to stop my cables (or fingers) getting sliced on it and that actually works really well!

Edit: I dropped some pics of my setup in the comments on the original thread!

  • now they’ve invented a special “format” that only can only be installed through their app

If I’m not mistaken, that’s the .apkm bundles right? That’s not their own format but another one Google invented to be able to dynamically install only the relevant parts of an app for a specific device type, locale, etc.

Android can’t install this on it’s own (I wonder who’s fault that is 🙄) but it can be installed via adb or through special installer apps like the Play Store, Aurora or I’m assuming the APKMirror app

  • This might not be the most helpful suggestion for apps you already have installed (I’ll leave that to others lol) but any time I have to set up Windows for a friend or family member, I do a complete minimal reinstall using an autounattend.xml script (this is an official method that sysadmins use to set up lots of machines quickly, but can also be used to avoid Microsoft’s bullshit from the very start) you can create your own easily here

I then use UniGetUI to install and manage all apps, this is a graphical frontend for Winget and Chocolatey that allows you to install virtually anything with an app store-like experience, but without the locked down ecosystem. The people I’ve introduced this to actually love it but it always takes a little explaining that this is how to do things now and they shouldn’t go downloading app installers from websites.
