Youre both right. We do have a lot of hardening against such things, but getting hit with a sizable flare could really really disrupt things. It would take a really hard hit for the doom to happen. Do you want to know why corn is subsidized? When mexico was producing good corn at a good price many years ago, they were undercutting US cereals for livestock growth. The US basically said, fuck mexico, and just paid the farmers to grow corn in the US just enough so they could sell their corn at a slightly lower price. It devastated Mexican farmers who had built a system of selling corn to the cereal grain hungry US. My native Mexican coworker told me in great detail about that one.

Yeah, but there’s a whole 100 year old system of feeding the US beef. Sure, we can change things. The system however, has been fabricated to produce beef. Its a very very large system that isn’t easily just changed. Can it be changed? Sure. Can that change happen easily and without economic pain? No. Its like oil. Sure, alternatives for gas and fertilizer exist, but its a hugely painful process to change when there has been such a reliance on a very ingrained system.
