Funny, I just uninstalled version 3 less than a week ago thinking that it was too plain and not that useful, but this new version 4.2.1 has a bunch of useful features, and makes it easy to look through journal entries as well.

Linux@lemmy.ml•NVIDIA's Results Of Conducting Wayland vs. X.Org Latency Testing
5·16 days agoSomeone in the comments of the Phoronix article linked to the whole slideshow:
https://indico.freedesktop.org/event/12/contributions/559/attachments/364/537/XDC Latency.pdfSeemingly Xorg ever so slightly beat wayland, objectively from the results, but I think given a larger sample size it could just as easily have gone the other way.
So that’s good. Although if Wayland was way better than Xorg that would also be good of course.XWayland not sucking as much as it used to is also good news.

Technology@beehaw.org•Reddit is putting more limits on Old.Reddit.com
7·19 days agoThe only reddit I use now is either via redlib, or by the domain listing which still use old.reddit.com format for the time being (https://www.reddit.com/domain/v.redd.it/ for example, or https://www.reddit.com/domain/youtube.com/ / https://www.reddit.com/domain/youtu.be/). But once they kill those domain listings I’ll not be spending much time there.
It’s funny how I hated the migration from Digg to reddit back in 2010 because reddit looked so ass, but once I got used to the features Reddit Enhancement Suite brought along, it was hard to give up.
Obligatory “fuck spez” and why not “fuck kevin rose” as well.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Aqloss is a nice music player I found on flatpak
3·23 days agoIt does look nice. Layout is the hardest part to get right, there’s no one size fits all, so opinionated players like that can run into a lot of empty space like shown in the screenshot.
My boring arse theming might give the wrong idea of Fooyin, but you can really make anything you want out of it, and layouts for every occasion.

Although I’m on Nobara so I use https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf-plugins-extras -> dnf-plugin-snapper, but the rest is the same.

5·2 months ago“Double old plus” in newspeak.
Baloo (which is KDE’s file indexer, which is meant to speed up file searches) was borked earlier this year, and I don’t know if it has been fixed yet, but seemingly it’d keep doing symlink loops which of course isn’t useful. This is likely to happen when you have any wine-prefix installed so even just Steam installed will do this.
The fix on my computer was simply turning it off for all of my /home/$USER folder by adding the location in System Settings - Workspace - Search - File Search - Stop indexing a folder.

If you’re on an nVME SSD, and if you rarely do file searches anyway, I don’t see any problems doing this.
As for RAM, definitely check out Zram. It works by compressing unused parts of memory back into RAM. Here’s what 8 GB Zram looks like on my PC right now:
> zramctl NAME ALGORITHM DISKSIZE DATA COMPR TOTAL STREAMS MOUNTPOINT /dev/zram0 zstd 8G 573,5M 138,6M 154,4M [SWAP]So it has compressed half a gigabyte of unsused memory down to ~150 megabytes, that’s a 3.7x compression rate, saving quite a bit of memory.
It’s very easy to set up, take a look here.
My config for reference, which ships by default with Nobara.
─────┬────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │ File: /usr/lib/systemd/zram-generator.conf ─────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── 1 │ # This config file enables a /dev/zram0 device with the default settings: 2 │ # — size — same as available RAM or 8GB, whichever is less 3 │ # — compression — most likely lzo-rle 4 │ # 5 │ # To disable, uninstall zram-generator-defaults or create empty 6 │ # /etc/systemd/zram-generator.conf file. 7 │ [zram0] 8 │ zram-size = min(ram, 8192) ─────┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Regarding stuff like which algorithm to use etc. the Arch wiki article on zram has some good info.
Thanks, I didn’t know about Twitter Web Viewer. Found a userscript that auto-redirects X posts to it. Ironically it says in the description that the script was made using Grok 😭

I’m surprised the requirements isn’t “To use Microsoft defender you need TPM version 2.0 or newer”
