  • I heard that recently reddit decided to shoot themselves in the foot, people needing to pay at minimum $10 000 a month or something like that for bots to do the scrapping or something like that. It is a big Fuck you to mods of the groups and small creators looking for news. Capitalism is a horrible thing, they are not making enough money from advertisments hopefully because people where leaving to Lemmy, I do not know but a girl can dream.

I am curious as to how much the Mods are being paid to offer this stuff, what self respecting selfhoster would want a licenses to anything? Especially those three things, there are FOSS alternatives to all three.

Why would you use paid for Adguard; it is good for some devices and even at that it is not good for the whole device, you can use Adguard Home or my choice Pi-Hole where you are doing a whole LAN ad blocker. You can even set up a VPN or two and use the pihole away from your LAN.

I was unaware of what PhotoPrism was so I went and looked, and thought ok it is like immich but you pay for it?

Why would any self respecting homelabber pay for Emby, all they are doing is trying to get money out of you when Jellyfin is right there mocking the other paid for home lab video streamers like Plex and Emby when their prices go up.

  • Your privacy on the internet is only as strong as the weakest part of your setup, the AppleTV would be better privacy focused but do remember you are running Google’s native Youtube app, and there is no way of installing third party things because of their privacy focus.

Before I started my de-apple journey I used my iphone with unwatched and airplayed it to the AppleTV. DO NOT, let me repeat that, do not get an AppleTV if you want to enjoy your media outside of Apple’s walled garden. My current setup has a pi5 attached to my TV using Librewolf and ublock, on top of that I have it on my homelab vLAN which is the most protected vLAN on my LAN! For even further for privacy I have pihole with unbound for my whole LAN. I could go down the rabit hole of my even further privacy, just know I have layers. When I get my hand me down Mac mini I will be installing Debian on it and using it as a better home theatre PC. Just know that if you have a pi5 you can do more than what an AppleTV can do with more privacy, if you have a proper or better than a pi5 dedicated HTPC (running Linux, not Mac OS, or Windows) you can do so much more with privacy being your focus, like stripping your google account away and adding sponserblock.

  • I do not currently use a VPN but I am thinking of getting Proton VPN, I do however use different forks of Debian on most things. All of my IoT things do not have access out of my 10.6.66.0 vLAN (which has its own wifi) and most do not have access to the WAN. I use Home Assistant for most things on my 10.0.69.0 homelab vLAN (does not have wifi it is all wired) to reach into the IoT vLAN to do stuff which has limits to my personal vLAN 10.42.0.0 (Does have its own wifi). My guest vLAN 10.4.20.0 (Does have its own wifi but does not have eth) does not have acess to anything other than the WAN, just for shits and giggles I have a child friendly vLAN 10.6.7.0 (Does have its own wifi but does not have eth) that only has wifi and does not acess to anything other than the WAN during certain times. My personal wireguard vLAN 10.69.42.0, has the same acess as my personal vLAN, and my guest wireguard vLAN has the same acess as my guest vLAN but limits them to 2 hours before OpenWRT kicks them off.

I do not use my ISPs firewall/router just the fiber modem into my OpenWRT firewall. The DNS I use is two piholes with unbound.
