  • I was already “uncomfortable” with executions, they were already obvious to me, I’m quite familiar with the practice and this doesn’t particularly make me any more uncomfortable than I already was. How I feel as an individual, and the means available to me, have not translated into policy changes. That’s why we are discussing the broader, societal effects. Whether or not people who don’t already care will start to care, whether the effect will be positive or negative. And that brings us back to the actual point, that unless you can provide some sort of evidence, your idea that it will have a positive effect is just conjecture, that doesn’t really fit with the evidence we do have.

The correct action is to stop executions, not to force them back behind the curtains.

    No shit.

When I raised the possibility of them being merely forced back behind the curtains, I was discussing a possibility of what may happen, not what should happen. What the “correct” answer is isn’t relevant to that in any way, because what is “correct” has no bearing on what is or will be. You keep losing track of the point.

  • The problem is that putting it in the public can also normalize it and desensitize people to it, especially if it’s celebrated or seen as entertainment. We know that this can be the case, because again, it was the case for thousands of years.

Also, it’s entirely possible that even if it leads to conversations, and even if those conversations lead to things changing, it may be that the thing that changes is simply not publicizing executions. The Democrats pat themselves on the back for making incremental “progress” just by returning to the status quo, and anyone who says, “But executions are still happening” will be seen as an unreasonable radical, a “both-sideser.”

What you’re suggesting is similar to the logic of accelerationism and accelerationism doesn’t generally work. ICE raids have increased in intensity and visibility, but the Democrats still won’t commit to abolishing it. They raised a big stink over child separation before and when they got in power they ended that specific policy but kept the camps and deportations going, and what I described above is exactly what happened with mainstream discourse.

You can’t just make conditions worse and expect it to spur people into action, even if it might seem like you could intuitively. And the reason we know that is that we have history to look at, and we can see ages upon ages of people in horrible conditions, unable to change those conditions because of a lack of power and organization. And you’ll note that “do people have power and organization” is a question that the logic of accelerationism doesn’t even look at, it’s a factor that we discover is important when we look at what actually happens in practice. Which is exactly why you can’t just use this kind of extremely reductive reasoning and expect it to be at all reliable. There are any number of factors that could lead to things playing out differently.

  • I’m not missing the point at all, I understand your reasoning. The question is whether there’s any actual evidence to show that that reasoning actually holds up in practice. I think there’s a significant amount of evidence that it doesn’t, that being that executions were publicized for thousands of years. You countered that TV makes a difference and listed a bunch of dates. I asked if any of those dates actually show a correlation with televised executions. Since you didn’t answer, and I’ve never heard of that, I’m gonna say no, and so there’s no real evidence for what televised executions would lead to.

All you have is an unsubstantiated hypothesis.

  • 2024: “If you accept that the Democrats are fucking over Palestinians and vote for them anyway, then are you going to follow the same logic when they fuck over trans people?”

2026: “If you accept that the Democrats are fucking over trans people and vote for them anyway, then are you going to follow the same logic when they fuck over gay people?”

2028: “If you accept that the Democrats are fucking over gay people and vote for them anyway, then are you going to follow the same logic when they fuck over PoC?”

    2030…

This is exactly why you take a stand and nip that shit in the bud. “We will hang together, or we will all hang separately.” The moderate fascists want to chip us away, piece-by-piece, dividing and conquering so that our defeat is inevitable.

We have to draw a fucking line and hold that line, come hell or high water. Why would I stand behind someone who will sell me down the river at the drop of a hat, the moment it’s politically expedient?

Some people will just never understand this. But they can at least understand that it is what we believe, and that we will not abandon and sell out our comrades simply in the “lesser evil.” Whether we face a greater or lesser evil, we must face it united, or all hope is lost. Solidarity is non-negotiable.

  • As an Ace Attorney themed account I would just like to say that this is the most Ace Attorney thing that has ever happened irl.

Phoenix: Crap, the prosecution’s got me. They just exposed my client as a liar and proved he was in Atlanta at the time of the crime… Maybe I should just give up…

Maya: Don’t lose hope just yet! Did you notice that poster they pulled out?

Phoenix: Come to think of it, I didn’t really get a good look at it. They pulled it down pretty quick.

Maya: Why do you think that is? There must be something on that poster that shows a contradiction with something in the prosecution’s case.

Judge: Well, it looks like that about wraps things up. I now pronounce the defendent G-

Phoenix: OBJECTION! Your honor, I’d like to take another look at those texts.

    [procedural bullshit]

Maya: Finally! Now’s our chance. Examine each statement closely, and I’m sure you’ll find the contradiction!

    [cross examination]

Phoenix: If it was Iowa playing… could it be that it was the Hawkeyes?

    [Reaction shots of people going:]

[Suddenly the whole case turns around, now you just have to prove who really did it even though you’re a defense attorney and that’s 100% not your job]

  • What would they even do about the cost of living?

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. The government could chose to spend money helping people in any number of ways, but it’s always “how you gonna pay for it?” Meanwhile there’s a blank check for building bombs to be dropped on Yemen, Iran, or Palestine.

Give us universal healthcare so people don’t go bankrupt and lose their houses when they develop a health problem. Maybe build some of those cheap, commieblock apartments that we can rent for like 6% of our income instead of a third or more. Build public transit so we don’t have to spend tons of money buying and maintaining cars. Subsidize essentials like groceries. If we weren’t pouring a trillion dollars a year into terrorizing brown people on the other side of the world, we could afford to do basically anything.

All of those are things that other governments have done, but here in the States we’re so used to the government doing fuck-all to the point that people start thinking it isn’t even possible for the government to help anyone. But if you look at other countries, or at history, there’s plenty of stuff they could do if they wanted to.

  • The young men sampled are overwhelmingly concerned about cost-of-living issues — the same reason that many swung toward the GOP two years ago.

I believe we are in the age of one-term presidents, and this is why. The system is failing people, and whoever’s in charge is going to get blamed the hardest. Four years is enough time for enough voters to forget how much they hate they other party, or if they remember, then their frustration with them is on the back burner.

So long as nobody does shit about the cost of living, voters will keep trying to punish whoever’s in charge.

  • State Capitalist, Feudalist, Plutocratic, Authoritarian, Nationalist, Fascist.

Not a bad start, but y’all can get more creative with it, I’m sure. Throw in a Kleptocracy, an Oligarchy, or maybe spice it up with some Mercantalism. If you wanna get crazy with it, how about Gerentocracy? Anything goes in this space! And don’t be afraid to mix and match!

stratified ethno-centric state capitalism more akin to theoretical fascism. . . something like the state capitalism of Rhodesia

chef’s kiss See, look at that, perfect example. That’s a description that’s pure creativity. Think of it like an expressionist painting, it’s just about whatever you feel, whatever you want to put out on a canvas. It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to have any resemblance to reality, just write whatever you feel. And sometimes it’ll look like you just vomited on a page, but that’s just art for you.

Remember, kids, there’s one rule when talking about China, and one rule only: it has to be negative. Beyond that, anything goes!
