4tb it pretty high. I back up my files to backblaze, HDDs on site, and a cold copy on HDDs off-site.

They’re in my attached garage. In the living room when it’s quiet I can hear them humming. Does that count?

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's your favorite linux os you suggest to beginners who wish to learn linux?
2·4 days agoFor sure, I was mostly balking at suggesting people new to Linux use weird DEs. I feel like starting with KDE is the way to go.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's your favorite linux os you suggest to beginners who wish to learn linux?
2·4 days agoI’m really curious why though. Was it raw Ubuntu with the default Gnome based DE or Kubuntu? I started with Manjaro and went back to windows a while back. Now I’m on Kubuntu and loving it. I think the main difference is that there’s so much more support and whatnot with Ubuntu.

8·4 days agoI think this is terrible advice lol. I switched to Kubuntu from Windows a while back and it’s been great. I even tried a Gnome based DE and hated it. Kubuntu just works. It was familiar then and continues to be familiar and practical.

I create videos for YouTube/PeerTube and backup all of the raw footage. The actual storage count is currently 130TB in my main NAS with about 250TB for an offsite cold storage backup (as most of my data doesn’t change much) and on-site live-ish backup. I also have the benefit of being able to get reputable used commercial grade HDDs from work for $10/TB, even right now, it makes it way too easy. Shameless plug of my PeerTube instance: https://joeltube.com/ or @JoelKalich on YouTube.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How is everyone dealing with Android 17's "Nearby Devices" change?English
24·14 days agoWhy are permissions so damn confusing? I say this as someone who knows why permissions are needed, such as location to find nearby devices. But why must we keep track of “permission X is for thing unrelated to X” in our heads? Now I haven’t tried to make a permissions system for the masses, so I guess I can’t say too much, but it doesn’t seem that difficult to just make the permission name relate to what it does and provide a short synopsis for it.
Twice a year is crazy. I suppose most of my maintainence is adding drives (I’m a creator and I definitely totally need to archive all of my footage), but I also run a fair few apps that have needed manual update steps, so I do all my updates manually so I can fix stuff if it breaks.

31·17 days agoI’m not sure I understand how that’d work. How would they know when the door was closed so they could automatically lock the deadbolt? Or would you need to use a key to close the door from the outside?

6·17 days agoI was super anti smart locks until I left my garage open and doors unlocked for an entire weekend because I’m forgetful. With smart doors and locks that doesn’t happen and, possibly a controversial take, doors being closed and locked by reputable smart devices is more secure than them standing open. Most crimes are those of opportunity, and a thief is just gonna try the door and break a window when it doesn’t open if they’re willing to go that far.

62·17 days agoSo does me forgetting to lock the door.
I once left my garage doors open all weekend with thousands of dollars of tools in it, along with my motorcycle with the key in it. My garage at the time was quite visible from a very busy street. I got lucky and nothing was stolen. My garage doors are smart now, so that doesn’t happen any more. Sure, someone could hack my home assistant server and open the garage, but that’s way less likely than my continued pattern of forgetfulness.
Based on that logic, my house also has smart locks now that automatically lock when I leave. I will say that they aren’t cheapo who-knows fingerprint locks, they’re made by a real company and just have a keypad with a lengthy entry code. The only added vulnerabilities should be my home assistant server and the entry code.

I’m excited for memories as well, but I’m not sure you’re using the phrase deal breaker correctly here haha.
