Of course turning off personalised ads is good for privacy, but this post seems to imply it could help protect against this spyware as well. That’s not true, is it? To me those things sound totally unrelated.

Some songs got renamed or put under a different artist, because I guess, the actual song is not in the MusicBrainz database
How did you manage that? If picard can’t find a song, it won’t put it in the rightmost view and it won’t be processed.
I don’t let Picard move my files, only tag and rename them, because (last time I tried) I couldn’t easily see where it was going to move the files to verify if it’s correct. I run Lidarr pretty much exclusively to sort everything correctly lol.
Okay, then don’t post these projects if you’re not sure and don’t want to find out.

2·2 months agoThose gl flatpaks are actually the display drivers. Flatpak doea not use any system libraries, it has to depend on a flatpak for everything, but most things are already in org.freedesktop.Platform, but not nvidia drivers of course.

2·2 months agoI can say from personal experience the the effect of driving more cautiously is real, but that’s because i could tell i couldnt react or think nearly as quickly as normal. If some kid came running from a blind spot, i would have hit them, no doubt. Definitely would not recommend. (I’ve only driven while high twice, both times because the person asking me didn’t know i was high, and i wanted to keep it that way. Would never do it again, at least i dont care if people know i smoke anymore)

2·2 months agoYeah, there’s probably a reason why they don’t have any side-profile shots with the gimbal stored away.
There’s nothing to fix, Firefox simply does not support the webusb standard required for this yet, unfortunately: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebUSB_API
Of course google has already enabled support even though the spec is not final. So now the standard will have to follow Chrome’s implantation, because so many people already use it.
This is what people mean when they say google practically controls web standards.

Unfortunately I can’t switch to the american version. For some reason they use the absolutely awful captcha with the slowly disappearing images, which I refuse to use. The Dutch version has the regular one where you just select the images without them disappearing.

1·3 months agoIn the case of Alexa or Google Nest, it’s not actually constantly recording or sending stuff to the cloud. Those things have a special wake-word chip, that is trained on one or a few phrases (okay google). That’s fully offline, and only once it detects the wake word does it activate the actual microphone and processing.
If you believe Google and Amazon, that is. Which I surely don’t. But if they were actually constantly recording and sending that data somewhere, security researchers would have noticed odd traffic in their network.

1·3 months agoMost CPUs don’t allow you to read the serial number anymore (from userspace at least, I’m sure there are ways of extracting it).
Except Raspberry Pi for some reason, and for some other reason my coworker decided to use that as a device identifier for one of our services (devices we build and control, we’re not just tracking random people). So now I guess we’re stuck with raspberry pis for the near future. On any other device it just returns "ERR00000“.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Plex price gouging any users they have leftEnglish
0·4 months agoOh yeah and apparently you can’t stream remotely without a subscription either? If it were a feature they had to spend time on I’d still not want to use it, but I’d understand at least.
From the application’s point of view, there is no difference between internet and intranet access. I just saw that downloading the media you already own, using your own infrastructure, requires an even more expensive subscription.
How tf did people stick around with this shit for so long.

0·4 months agoI tried Plex once, before I knew about jellyfin. I just wanted an open-source self-hostable media server with my own media.
When I tried it, after installing Plex, I was presented with a login for a Plex hosted account. Iirc that was optional and I skipped it, after that came the nags for Plex pass. Piss off. That’s exactly the opposite of what I wanted out of something like jellyfin.

Umm no? Personalised means the ads you get served have been chosen for the interests tied to your advertising id. Turning it off just means you get generic ads not targeted to you.
