There was some drama after one of Mullvad’s cofounders was outed for donating considerable sums of money to right wing organizations. It’s fallen out of favour as the default recommendation as a result

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Can you please tell me all about your DIY router?English
1·20 days agoI have 2.5G N100 and it works wonderfully at that rate. I think higher might be tough, but it still pushes that throughput even with IPS enabled in OPNsense.
The complained about heat is right though. I stuck a noctua fan on the top and it’s been happy since. It lives my closet, so noise isn’t a facto anyways
I miss my Yoga 730. Best laptop I’ve ever had. The 2-in-1 and pen support carried me through uni. All my lecture notes could be typed and diagramed as needed in the moment.

3·3 months agoSeeing as you’re running this from a laptop, was this speed test performed on a wired connection?
For self-hosting services you want to access remotely, you may find this to be exceptionally limiting. It may not be too bad if you live alone, and you’re sure no one else is using your network when you’re gone, but other devices performing routine updates may be enough to disrupt your outgoing connection. Additionally, that ping would indicate the speed test is being run from somewhere quite far from you. Latency that bad isn’t a great time for applications that might expect a consistent response time.
As for streaming those FLACs from your server while at home: You’re not going to struggle loading these files, because your local network is likely running at least at gigabit speeds. That speed test isn’t representative of your network as a whole, but just your internet connection.
Doesn’t feedbin have a self-hostable Docker?

Linux@lemmy.ml•Firefox 153 Available With Support For Vulkan Video Decoding, Experimental JPEG-XL
9·4 months agoNvidia and AMD both have differing APIs for video decoding. The idea in using Vulkan is that not every GPU supports the vendor specific decoding method, but they do all support Vulkan (modern GPUs, anyways). So this way you still get hardware accelerated decoding through a more widely supported means.

Android@lemmy.world•There's one group of Android users Google's new sideloading rules won't affectEnglish
1·4 months agoI feel like you’re overestimating the number of people who buy a Google or Samsung device because they want to install third party apps. A lot of them buy an Android device because they just don’t like Apple. Most folks don’t install anything from anywhere other than the Play Store because they don’t even know there are other choices.
In general, people’s preferences are most often born from whatever their first device was, and nothing more, with little interest in what they can do with it other than what’s required of them.

I’m not sure. Mullvad is still a good product, but what it funds is not.
If I’m entirely honest, I mostly see VPN services as a predatory market, inflated by their own marketing campaigns about the risk of personal privacy. There are some products who are true to their word, like Mullvad, but most are looking for a quick buck from the average user who might forget they have a running subscription if they keep the cost low enough.
Frankly, after seeing what’s happened with Proton and Mullvad, I’m not inclined to believe anyone in this market amounts to more than a paranoid libertarian at best.
