4·5 hours agoMy dad had a couple of heart attacks, 15 years apart. The second one killed him, he was close to a hospital, but they were unable to save him. The first one however, he described it afterwards as feeling like a horse was sitting on his chest.
Here’s to hoping Senator Murphy has a quick recovery from his stroke.

1·8 hours agoNice to see Obama and read about his humor. What a great speaker. I have not been in a Cheesecake factory since dear old dad died in the 1990s, so I pulled up some photos of the interior decor. Hoo boy, they even have the Eye of Sauron! Yep, Obama is right once again!

I too have known some folks who claim to be Christians to be honorable, upstanding folks, but my guess is they would have been so had they never been exposed to the religion. The case against Christianity is not just against American forms of it. Here’s some reading for you, and be advised this is a fairly large site:
Christian Abuse of Children - Bad News About Christianity
The Harm inflicted by Christians - Bad News About Christianity
Bad News About Christianity - What is so Bad about Christianity?
Kristin Kobes Du Mez studies the white Christian women who preach a religion of universal love but practice a politics of division, exclusion, and hate.
There’s your error right there, Christianity is not a religion of love and tolerance.
Nail that 5% to the cross of death instead of “let us not let this happen again.” It’s a death cult, and they wonder why church attendance has fallen.

3·4 days agoNot too many days ago I used the term Gang Of Psychos. I posted the article largely because I liked the word. I don’t think the author consistently used the term in her article, mixing regular old patriarchy with psychopatriarchy. Psycho- suggests something within the mind.

politics @lemmy.world•Flavio Bolsonaro flees to U.S. after losing Brazil election, sources say
7·5 days agoFlávio’s departure defies an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes prohibiting the defeated candidate from leaving the country and instructing him to surrender his passports. The ruling is connected to an investigation into Flávio’s alleged participation in a money-laundering scheme. (He’s also being investigated as part of a probe into the financing of a biopic of his father.) By Tuesday morning, the younger Bolsonaro had missed the deadline to hand over his travel documents, and the Brazilian federal police were looking into whether he had left the country via Argentina.
He’s not yet a US immigrant, but it appears he violated laws by leaving Brazil.

9·6 days agoVaccines are one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine. Republicans think, “Make them a profit center.”
“Vaccines are more cost-effective than getting the flu,” Kroening said. He said he still would choose the new vaccine despite the co-pay. “I’m able to pay the $40, and I’m happy I did, but still not happy that insurance didn’t cover it,” he said.

9·6 days ago“Our faith is respectful…it reflects the ideas of justice and fairness, things that are just fundamental to the Bible,” Hamilton told me in early October. “Two thousand verses in the Bible talk about poverty and taking care of the poor. That’s not what you hear from Christian nationalists.”
The American right-wing has a long term issue with the liberal nature of Jesus Christ’s teachings. This preacher can try to appeal to the right-wing’s better natures until time itself ends.

11·7 days agoI learned a new term today, “European-style Christianity”.
The study, published in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, looked at cognitive factors while stripping out variables like demographics and education. It found that in the US, those who subscribe to the doctrine of Christian nationalism — characterized as a belief in strict social order, blurring of religion with a sense of civic belonging, and promotion of European-style Christianity — tend to correspond to a low level of cognitive ability.

One of my greatest personal fears is that a Constitutional Convention will be used to shove Christianity down our throats. That said, failure to regulate churches has resulted in a group of conservative churches that preach pretty much the opposite of what Jesus said. The document was a series of compromises, far from perfect. The compromise over keeping the government out of religion was to keep the peace and avoid sectarian warfare. We’re seeing some hints of that as a result of the Talarico vs Paxton race in Texas.
