  • I was using Nvidia Shields but wanted to get away from Android. Over the summer i bought some Dell mini pcs, put the Plasma Bigscreen OS on them and got some USB remote controls.

These have been working really well and is nice to have them running linux. The tv interface is really good and for the few apps that didn’t have linux versions i just made my own.

I use mine mainly for plex (which has an app) Youtube (vacummtube) and made my own apps to access tube archivist, odysee archivist and stash. So i guess it depends what you watch on it.

  • Yes I was surprised myself. I expected to need to keep my Android phone kicking around for the odd thing yet, I have found Sailfish alternatives to over half of my Android apps and for the other half they work just like they did on android. I have not noticed any slow down or anything. Even my bank app works, although from what I have read that does depend on your bank.

  • I use LTO for my 70TB of data. My rig is done on the cheap. I got an LTO 5 drive external off ebay for around 500. SAS card and a really old cheap HP desktop for about 50. Works perfectly, I have done a full system restore from backups and the tapes are cheap. Have had this system working for 5 years now.

In the future i plan to upgrade to LTO 7 when the drives become cheaper, but I have found it to be very reliable, great for making my backups and just so cool and fun to use.

  • I am using Sailfish OS which has surprised me with its reliability, good ux and ability to do most things.

It is in a weird state, most of the OS is open source, but a few parts a proprietary. However when I was looking for the best Linux alternative to Android it seemed the best option. It seems rock solid, it has a lot of native apps and for the things that aren’t native I can just install android apps straight from the Aurora store and they work as fast as if they were native.

I had the same trouble when looking for a NAS case that did not cost a fortune.I ended up buying a Gemini nas case from Ali Express.

Other than waiting a couple of weeks for it to arrive the price was around $140 USD and it is actually a really good case and mine holds 8 drives.
